Changed "sa" password in SQL SMS, now can't use "sa" in GP 2013

I changed the sa password in SQL Server Management Studio. After that I couldn’t log into Dynamics GP as “sa” user. Went back to SQL SMS and entered the previous password. Then I could log into GP as “sa” user. I did this several times to confirm that I wasn’t typing in the wrong password.  Apparently GP is retaining the sa password from the original installation no matter what changes are made in SQL SMS. In the GP User Setup dialog, the sa USER ID choice does not allow password changes.

So how do I change the sa password to be able to log into both GP and SQL? I did a search and came up with nothing. Found some posts stated that changing the sa password in SQL SMS would flow though to GP. That doesn't seem to be the case with either my installation or GP2013.

Aaah, the lightbulbs have gone off. I too forgot about the GP password length restriction. Good work on your part.

Ah! I forgot about the password limitation! Glad you were able to figure this out. :-)

Ok, we seem to have successfully logged in to GP2013 with the new sa password. In the back-and-forth password changing on the SQL server for GP, as well as doing our other periodic password changes by several IT people, we got confused. When we finally got straightened out, the sa password changes in the SQL server for GP flowed through to the GP2013 log in. We are using long, complex passwords, which also got us off track because GP seems to limit the length to 15 characters. Thanks everyone for the help.

    Hi Richard,

Unless I am misunderstanding what you mean, if you have 3 system databases (what used to be DYNAMICS) with different names in the same SQL instance, the 'sa' password for all of them will still be the same, since the 'sa' password is global to the SQL instance.

GP will not allow you to change the 'sa' password since that is the SQL Server system administrator.

You mention that you are using GP 2013. When GP 2013 was installed did you select to use the default name of DYNAMICS or did you choose another name and perhaps have more than one DYNAMICS system database? I know we are a few days past April 1st, but perhaps your IT staff is playing an April Fool's joke and one database was created using one 'sa' password and another one is using another 'sa' password. If you log into GP 2013 and change the 'sa' password within GP does that work?

I'll try that Victoria - hadn't thought of doing that test. Back to you in about an hour or so due to meetings.

    Mike,

It feels like there is something else going on. As an additional test, can you try this:

    - change the 'sa' password in SQL

    - try logging into GP with the OLD 'sa' password

If that works, then GP is not pointing to the same SQL instance or you have some kind of customization/modification that is causing this not be work properly. The latter seems unlikely, but I suppose it is possible.

I change the password in SSMS, then log out. Then log in again to make sure I have a good password for sa on SSMS. Then I try logging in to GP 2013 and the new sa password doesn't work. Then I go back to SSMS, change the sa password back to the one that works on GP 2013, and log out of SSMS. When I then try logging in to GP with the old sa password, I can get in. Seem like GP is holding on to the original sa password.

The ODBC connection does not actually store the login or password, so that can't be it.

Is it possible that you are logging into SSMS with a login that does not have enough permissions to change the 'sa' password? So it might not be giving you an error, but the password is not actually updating in SQL? Can you try logging in there with the 'sa' login? Change the password, then disconnect / log out. Log in again as 'sa' - only the new password should work. If that is the case, it should also now work in GP.

Changing to DYNSA is not the thing to do because only the 'sa' password is passed unhashed. What SQL client are you using for this DSN? Is it SQL Server or SQL Native client. You need to use the 32 bit ODBC administrator and use a System DSN then try different versions of the cleint. You will find this in the Windows\SysWOW64 folder. The file name is ODBCAD32.exe
