Moving to new Computers...

Posted on by 205

Still running XP pro (Core 2 Quad 2.66ghz, 4megs)on my POS system at my hobby store.  The register computer also hosts the database.  I am getting ready to move to Win7 or 8.  With the move I am thinking of setting up a dedicated back office computer for the database.

Will I see any performance improvements if I have the database running on a Windows Server platform instead of Win 7 or 8?  Currently have around 6000 SKU's.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Chris

Make sure you are running an updated RMS version.  atleast Service Pack 4 or newer on the updates.

If you are on 1.2 or 1.3 - Then run on Windows 7 32bit.

Also upgrade the ms sql server to atleast 2008R2.  This is the version that works best on that windows os.  If you update.  Make sure to install the Sql Server 2005 Backward Compatibility.

4G is all you really need for 32 bit machines.

Make sure your peripheral drivers and any add-ons you have installed work with 64 bit.

Some touchscreen functions in POS do not work with Windows 8.

    Yes 4 Gigs...

Thanks for the input.  I am going to grab an i5 system with 8gigs running win 7 pro and migrate to the new system.

Any snags with running POS on a 64 bit system?

I assume you mean 4G RAM not 4 megs. :-)

Based on those specs Windows 7 Pro should run fine.

Upgrading your XP PCs to Windows 7 Pro will likely boost the performance on its own.

You don't need a server OS. 1-2G on workstations and 4G on server is plenty for RMS with your item count.

Check with the manufacturer's support site to see if Window 7 Pro was included with original purchase, but PC was downgraded to XP Pro. If so, look for the original restore CDs.

Small shop...  Just one register.  I do a lot of online volume though (100+ packages a day).

How may registers?  If less than 20 connections are needed, use Windows 7 64bit.  I7 processor with 16GB of RAM and a Solid State hard drive you will be flying!  We have a second store running similar setup and the performance increase from an old Dell Server has been night  and day.

You can also greatly improve performance by upgrading all clients to I5 or higher Intel Processors.   NO AMD!  I learned this the hard way.
