Business Analyzer and companion App Service

Hello,

Has anyone successfully configured the Companion App - Business Analyzer to a workstation business analyzer app?  I setup business analyzer on our server and it works good.  I installed companion app service and it seems to function as far as I know with a local self signed certificate.  I then installed that certificate on my windows 8.1 laptop and installed the business analyzer app from the MS store but I cannot get it to connect.  When I copy the link from the server and paste into the configuration on my workstation it just says service connection cannot be established.  I have tried to find documentation but it is pretty light out there.  any help or tips for troubleshooting would be great.  Thanks!

    Rick,

It sounds like the issue is related to the self signed certificate. What location on the Windows laptop did you install this to? It should be in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities on the local Computer account.

    Thanks

    Hi Daryl,

Thanks for responding.  I verified the certificate is in Certificates (Local Computer) - Trusted Root CA.  Same as the server.  I also tried disabling my antivirus/firewall with no change.  I cant seem to see anything in my event log or the server which is why this is becoming difficult.  Any other suggestions to check?  Thanks

    Rick

    Jeff,

It sounds like the certificate should be trusted by the client. A couple of other items to check.

    1. Verify there is an inbound rule on Windows Firewall allowing communication over the port you used for the service.

    2. Verify the address used for the service connection is covered by the self signed cert and that a proper DNS entry exists for the address.

    3. If both of these look good we may have to use a web debugger program like Fiddler to see what the communications error is.

    Thanks

    Hey

I am not the most familiar with certificates so it may be possible this portion is not right.  My Firewall is off so I don't think that is the issue.

I generated the self signed cert on the server (it is the sql server that hosts the reporting services).  it goes to the personal store which I can then see in companion app services to use (I can only see ones in personal certs from companion app service to use).  I have tried both servername and webname of the reporting services as a certificate.  assign this to companion app services.  export the cert and import to my machine in local machine and add to trusted root with no luck.  instant error when I copy the link from companion app services to my business analyzer 'service connection cannot be established'.

seems I left the firewall on the server on :)  whoops!  it is now working.  thanks for the tips in troubleshooting and the responses.

Have you had any luck with this?  Just starting to look at this and not finding much help out there on the subject.

Have Business Analyzer installed, but working on the companion services now so we can test the Windows 8 app.  I am in a RDS environoment, GP is only installed on RDS boxes, not client PCs.

Everything is in house (not using Azure) and only wnat access from within the network (not coming through the firewall)

    Thansk.

    Kelly,

What step are you on and what error are you getting?

Even if the Companion App Service is on the same network as the client, the port could be blocked on the server's Windows Firewall. I believe that is what was happening in the first post on the thread.

    Thanks

    Daryl

That is correct.  ours started working fine after disabling the firewall

Created a self-signed cert and have the GP Companion services installed, but cannot connect to it from the Business Analyzer app.

Windows firewall is off, and added GP Companion App Services and Microsoft Dynamics GP Business Analyzer to the allow Incoming portion, but still cannot connect.

Open to any and all suggestions!

    Thanks

    Kelly,

I think we are running into an issue where the self-signed cert is not trusted on the computer where the Business Analyzer app is running. This can be checked by opening MMC on the Business Analyzer computer and adding the Certificates snap-in for the local computer, verifying that the certificate is in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities\Certificates folder. If it isn't then you will need to import it.

    Thanks

    Daryl
