Too many data fields error when creating a mail merge

I am currently running a TEST environment using CRM 4.0 and I am trying to create mail merge templates for Leads and Opportunities. I have added the document as an xml file but whenever I try to edit the template using word I get the error "Record 1 contains too many data fields". Even if i continue with the merge any changes made are not saved.

Anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it?
