Inventory Availability Issue in SL 7

It appears that there is an inventory availability issue in SL 7.  The issue is that when an inventory item is allocated to an open shipper it is still available to be transferred.  We have an instance where we had an inventory item that was backordered.  The PO was fully received for the inventory item.  The shipper then was generated.  However, a 2-step transfer was then able to be created for this inventory item as well, when we believe it shouldn’t have.  I am stating that we believe it shouldn’t have because in SL 6, which we recently upgraded from, if we tried to transfer that item, we wouldn’t be able to.  We would get an error message indicating insufficient quantity available, please reenter.  This message no longer is appearing in SL 7.  Did something change in SL 7 regarding inventory availability?

Is it possible that transfers in SL 7 are looking at quantity on hand as opposed to quantity available?

    Sharon O,

The behavior you are seeing actually occurs by design based on a bug that was corrected in SL 7.0SP1. In the versions prior to SL 7.0SP1, transfer batches were based on the quantity available for an item, so the system took into account what had been allocated in other transactions. It was determined in this bug fix that this behavior was incorrect, and the quantity check for transfers should be based on the Quantity on Hand rather than the quantity available. The thinking behind this is if you have a shipper that needs to be processed immediately, and it cannot because you do not have enough quantity to do so, but you do have the quantity in another site or bin location you should be able to move that quantity to get the shipper processed regardless.

We are also experiencing the following behavior and we are wondering if it is related to the change in transfer batches being based on quantity on hand.  If the inventory batch from sales journal processing is not released prior to a transfer batch being completed, the inventory batch related to the sales journal does not release because the quantity will go negative.  The quantity originally allocated to the shipper in the sales journal is reallocated to the transfer leaving no quantity for the inventory batch related to the sales journal.  Is it true that the quantity on hand is not updated until all inventory batches have been released?

    Sharon,

Thanks for the update. It is true that the on hand will not update until the batch has released. Before the batch is released the quantity is kept in the Shipped Not Invoiced column and does reduce the available which would prevent other Sales Orders from attempting to use the quantity. Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
