Is this a brand new job, or an existing job that has had entries posted to it? If its an existing job and you posted something to it (i.e. a sales invoice tied to the job) then the system will not let you change the customer anymore.

    Hi,

This error means the job already has posted entries (like usage, sales, or ledger entries) linked to the original customer. Once entries exist, the Sell-to Customer No. cannot be changed. The only options are to keep the current customer, create a new job for the new customer, or reverse/remove posted entries if possible, before changing.

    Thanks

    Hi Kelly,

I hope that the issue has been resolved or an alternative solution has been found, given that considerable time has passed since it was initially raised in August 2024.

    Hi Kelly,

The error message “You cannot change Sell-to Customer No. because one or more entries are associated with this job” is standard behavior in BC, and it’s designed to protect the integrity of posted transactions.

    Here’s what’s happening:

    • Once a job has posted entries (e.g., job ledger entries, resource usage, item consumption, or invoicing), the system locks the Sell-to Customer No. field to prevent retroactive changes that could misalign financial and operational records.
    • This ensures that all posted entries remain tied to the original customer for audit and reporting purposes. Changing the customer after posting would break the link between the job and its financial trail.

If you need to associate the job with a different customer, here are clean options:

    • Create a new job for the new customer and copy over the planning lines or structure. This maintains clarity and avoids data conflicts.
    • If the change is purely for display or reporting purposes, consider using a custom field or job dimension to tag the new customer without altering the original Sell-to Customer No.
    • If no entries have been posted yet, you can still change the Sell-to Customer No. directly on the Job Card.
