Track Contact name for page visit in Dynamics 365 Marketing

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We are using Microsoft Dynamics 365 Marketing Module. In our Dynamics Marketing module we have created a Marketing Website page to track the visits of users on website and we are tracking the Page visits, Referral URL, time for users coming on our website but its not tracking the Contact name if a contact is already in our database and visits our website. It shows Anonymous visit to every contact it track.

Does anyone have ay idea why its not tracking the contact name if contact is already in our database and how we can check it or resolve it?

    Hi BeyondKey,

I found another way to record contact.

We could embbed a button which contains a link to marketing page.

If contact opens marketing page via the link/button in delivered email, his/her visit will be regarded as "Named".

It seems that due to marketing email will be sent to known contacts, thus the encoded link might contains some query parameters to identify contact.

To confirm my guess, I copied a link in marketing email of contact A, opened it in another browser in private mode,

then the new visit in Insights will still be named status and associated with contact A.

Thus you could also let your contacts open marketing page via the link in marketing email to track them in "Named" status without form submission.

Those third party email marketing tools could work in a similar way.

e.g: It recorded the contact when someone visits on website thought a LinkedIn page.

In marketing page of other third party tools, does contact also open LinkedIn page throught the link in the marketing page?

And did you also send website link by marketing email to identify contacts?

    Regards,

    Clofly

    Hello Clofly,

I am unsure about that they added any parameters to record the contact but it recorded the contact whn someone visits on website thought a LinkedIn page as well.

I do agree what you say above, but I an confused that until someone does not submit any form through our website his contact name will be anonymous in system ? Everyone don't want to allow any visitor to submit any form to record him in system. As per Marketing perspective, we don't know the contact name of the person who visited our website if he does not provide any of his details of fills out any form (prefill also comes in this but if contact just visited to read an article on website).

I am unsure how the third party email marketing tool works but they have a feature of tracking contact name as well if a known contact visits your website else a monthly report of how many contact visited website last month will be too less with only names who submitted a form.

    Hi BeyondKey,

    For the example you gave,

these contacts are known for us because we know they exist in database.

However, the tracking script doesn't know visitor's identity, because no interaction information is received by script to do matching job.(only visit behavior.)

For other email marketing tools you have worked, it seems that they allow users to add some parameters to link in delivered emails to support recording feature?

    Hello Clofy,

Thank you for this information. But it is just with Dynamics Marketing Module that it does not track the known contact if he visits website without filling any form ? For example if we have few contacts in system and we sent them an email campaign with a case study or monthly newsletter. The known contact opens that email and visits our website to read the article. He also accessed multiple pages on our website. Few days later he visits our LinkedIn page and visited our website through LinkedIn and read few articles. Does that contact will be recoded as anonymous ? I guess he should be recoded as a known contact and displays the name as he is already in our system.

I know that I have worked earlier with other email marketing tools that records the known contacts who visited the website without the contact fill any form.

    Hi BeyondKey,

    > But does it only records a visit when a form is submitted on our website?

    > Does it not record a contact name as soon as any contact already in our database visits website from any channel (email campaign, LinkedIn, organic search)?

We could understand how does known contact work based on landing page and subscription center:

firstly, cookie is core part to support known contact feature.

In Landing Page, only when visitor submits the form at least once and "allow prefilling" is checked, the cookie will be set to record contact.

In Subscription Center, due to link to the form contains query parameters to identify contact and prelling is always enable, thus the cookie will always be set to record contact.

In a word, submission behavior is used to match existing contacts in database, a matching job is vital to make visitor be "Named" status.(SC is special, even though submission is not performed, but the query parameters could be regarded as a submission behavior.)

If you would like to track form visitor as named/known contact, you should let them submit form at least once, and accept "prefilling" option.

    Clofly

    Hello Clofly,

Thank you for your response.  I understand that if a contact switches to a new device, a new browser, or to private-browsing mode, website visits will again be recorded as anonymous until that contact submits a marketing page using that device/browser combination.

But does it only records a visit when a form is submitted on our website ? Does it not record a contact name as soon as any contact already in our database visits website from any channel (email campaign, LinkedIn, organic search)?

Our all recorded visits are anonymous and not recoded any contact name.

I am confused as If we want to create a report for all contacts who visited our website last month, there will few records as not all contacts visiting our website already in our database submit any form.

As in marketing flow, we want to capture a customer journey a contact first visited our website through our email campaign, after couple of days he went to our company's LinkedIn page and visited our website though LinkedIn and later he visited our website through organic search. We are able to track the visits in Marketing but we are not able to track the contact name.

    Hi BeyondKey,

You can find possible reasons in link below:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/marketing/insights-glossary

    Website visited

If a known contact switches to a new device, a new browser, or to private-browsing mode, website visits will again be recorded as anonymous until that contact submits a marketing page using that device/browser combination.

    A possible situation is that:

There is a subscription center website.

Contact X loaded the website twice. -> Two (---   Anonymous) form visit records are created.

Contact X opened the SC via link in marketing email. A(Contact X  Named) form visit record is created.

However, due to cookies will still be save into visitor browser from form visit 1 and form visit 2, and form visit 3 is generated from same browser,

thus form visit 1 and form visit 2 records will match to updated contact, but "Visitor anonymous status" of 1 & 2 are still anonymous.

    pastedimage1587974243193v1.png

You could check whether there is a named visit record which could match to other anonymous visit records.

    Regards,

    Clofly
