What's the process to follow for smaller companies wanting to migrate their D365 from on-prem to online but who do not qualify for FastTrack due to insufficient license seat count (or they spend less than $100K with Microsoft annually)?
I've spent two days googling and watching videos but am unable to arrive at an answer
Migrating from on-premises Dynamics 365 to the online version involves several steps that should be carefully planned and executed to avoid data loss or service disruptions. Here's a technical overview of the process:
Evaluate the current on-premises D365 deployment: Before starting the migration process, it's important to assess the existing D365 environment and identify any customizations, integrations, or dependencies that may affect the migration. This includes reviewing the D365 version, database size, server infrastructure, network connectivity, security settings, and licensing agreements.
Plan the migration strategy: Based on the assessment, you can develop a migration strategy that outlines the scope, timeline, and resources needed for the migration. This includes deciding whether to use a manual or automated migration tool, which data and configurations to migrate, how to handle any customization or integration issues, and how to train and support end-users during and after the migration.
Prepare the online environment: To prepare for the migration, you need to set up a new instance of D365 online and configure it to match the on-premises environment. This includes creating a new organization, importing data and customizations, setting up security roles and permissions, and testing the functionality and performance of the online environment.
Perform the migration: Once the online environment is ready, you can start the actual migration process. This typically involves exporting data from the on-premises environment, transforming it into a format that can be imported into the online environment, and importing it into the online environment using a migration tool or manual process. During the migration, you should monitor the progress, check for errors or data discrepancies, and ensure that the migration is completed within the planned timeline and budget.
Verify and validate the migrated data: After the migration is complete, you need to validate the data to ensure that it is accurate, complete, and consistent with the original on-premises environment. This involves running test scenarios, comparing data between the on-premises and online environments, and verifying that all customizations and integrations are working as expected.
Go live and provide support: Once the migrated data is validated and verified, you can go live with the online environment and provide support and training to end users. This includes addressing any post-migration issues, troubleshooting technical problems, and helping users adapt to the new online environment.
