CRM for Outlook: *.OST file size limits when using Cached Exchange Mode

Posted on by 1,025

Does anyone know whether the recommended limit of a 5GB *.OST file size  still applies or can users easily exceed this without email tracking reliability issues?

Outlook OST files seem to comfortably go up to 10GB with most computer hardware, and I don't see why CRM for Outlook has increasing email tracking issues as the OST exceeds 5GB. Perhaps this CRM indexing code needs to be made more efficient to keep up with the standard features of Outlook..?

(A user is considering using Exchange online mode and turning off Cached Exchange Mode for OST file size considerations when using the CRM 2011 for Outlook email tracking features.)

As suggested by Solomon 'Disabling Email tagging' seems to be best option in your case

Yes 5 GB is a cutoff. Typically when the OST size crosses 5GB Limit, it causes outlook client performance issues when switching folders in the outlook client. If we have OST growing which means that whatever data for a particular mailbox is on the Exchange server is being written to the local disk. Keeping Outlook in Online mode would reduce the write operations to the local disk thereby increasing the performance of the Outlook application. To enhance the performance of email tracking abilities, we can disabled Email tagging by adding reg key of below on clients:

    1.  On the CRM client computer, exit Outlook.

    2.  Click Start , click Run , type regedit , and then click OK .

    3.  In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSCRMClient

    4.  To create a new registry entry, right-click MSCRMClient , point to New , and then click DWORD Value .

    5.  Change the name of the registry entry to TagDisabled .

    6.  Double-click TagDisabled .

    7.  In the Value data field, type 1 . Then click OK .

    8.  On the File menu, click Exit .

    9.  Restart the client and you should see better outlook client performance and more reliable email tracking.
