Alphanumeric characters in SL Batch Number

We have a requirement to support the alphanumeric characters in SL Batch Number. Right now, SL Supports only numeric characters in the Batch Number. Batch Number column in database can store the Alphanumeric characters but UI Form can't show the number that has alphanumeric characters.

I changed batch number manually in Db and then try to load the batch in voucher and adjustment screen, but i end up getting the error that "Attempting to set text control to an invalid value. Value violates the Mask specification". "System Message 6934".

I'm not sure if there is any setting available in SL where we can change this mask format.

Appreciate any help on this. Thanks in Advance,

Himal

Would changing the default logic of SL for batch number assignment give the user much more information? They are still limited to a short field size, and various reports including batch numbers will need to be modified.

Creating an extra field on the web form for a batch description and saving that to a user field in the batch table would avoid problems with SL, and the need to modify the default field mask for batch number. An extra field can be added to a PV lookup window in SL, which will probably meet the user's needs to locate a specific batch. Catalina would be able to advise you on how to add this to your integration, if you have problems with passing an additional field to SL.

The reason that lowercase characters would not work is because the mask property on the batch number field is set to UUUUUU which means that lowercase is converted to uppercase.  If you have customization manager you could change the mask property to XXXXXX which allows for lowercase characters.

We have our integration to SL which creates Vouchers in SL with the data entered in our application. We let user to enter the name of the batch and allowing alphanumeric character would help them give some more meaning full name. so that they can control the creation of voucher in specific batch.

Regarding the error, i got the issue. it has to do with the lower case characters in batch name. We use cataline web service to create the voucher and batch and it allowed me to create a batch name with lower characters. but SL doesn't allow me to load that batch. It worked charm when i changed it to Upper case.

Thank you for your help with this. Appreciate it.

I would think you are going to have multiple issues if you could utilize alpha characters in a batch number.  First of all, batch numbers are automatically assigned on new batches based on the highest used batch number in that module.  So, using an alpha character in the batch number would cause issues with assigning the next available batch number.  Second, the batch number not only lives in the batch table but also the document table, transaction table, the GL tran table and other fields, at times, in other records.  You would have to make sure you caught all those places with any such change.  Third, I tried doing what I believe you tried and I did not get the mask error message you indicated.  this makes me wonder if I am missing something as to what you really did or want to do.

The message you are talking about is generated with a field does not adhere to the mask property of that field.  It can mean you used a character that the mask does not allow or you exceeded the allowable number of characters.

I am interested in why you want alpha characters in the first place and exactly what you tried that resulted in that error.
