Why would the MRP have multiple entries giving way to many items to produce?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello,

I am really new to GP.  I have been assigned the task of getting the MRP to work for our company.  We have 2 types of goods, buy and make.  I typed in the forecast data for each separately into the "Sales Forecasting option".  The first time I did my regeneration, I ran it twice, once with the MAKE data in the MRP Forecasting selections and then once with the BUY data.  After looking through the list, it has us produce 50 of item X 4 times in the same day, when we should only need to produce only one set of 50 (it varies between 3 and 5 times of how much things are repeated).  I thought it might have been because of me running the regeneration twice, so I erased the history and then combined the two forecasting data and ran it once but it did not change anything.  Is there a place I can start looking or some common things that might cause this problem? Thank you for any help you can provide.

The way our company is set up is that we own smaller companies. Each company makes different goods but any company can sell any other companies goods.  We do this by selling our own items to ourselves, slightly changing the name, and then selling it to our customer (two of our companies share a warehouse, so things literally get moved from one side to the other, then sold to the customer).  One of our company has 3 warehouses and we treat each as a different site.

For that company, though we do transfers.

So to make sure I have answered your questions, we do produce (and buy) at each site. Each site keeps track of its own inventory. Demand is not always produced at the site it is being sold out of.  Most of the times these items are transferred first to our main warehouse and then sold to our ourselves.

What is Mfg?  My supervisor is out of town right now, but I can ask her when she gets back.

99% of the time there is a logical explanation for data outputs :).   MRP is not a great fit for multi site environments.    It totals things up per site, and in a multi site environment, it can usually be made to work with a little work on the reporting end.   By that I mean, do you produce at each site?  Is demand for each site produced at that site?  Do sites share inventory (inter company inventory transfers)?

On a side note, does your partner know Mfg?  SOunds like a couple of hours of training would be of great benefit.   This is pretty basic MRP stuff.

    Thank you for the response.

I am using GP 10.0  I am doing monthly dumps to enter the forecast.   We do not have a Fixed Order Qty. We have reorder levels entered for some, but not all items.

After some playing around, I have discovered the cause of the problem, but I am not sure how to fix it.  We have a bunch of different warehouses, each with its own site ID.  For every site associated with an item, it will be on the MRP list that many times plus one (the plus one is coming from the default site).  So for example is item A is associated with 3 sites, it will be quadruple listed on the MRP. Since each item is associated with a different number of sites, each item is being listed a different number of times.  I am telling it to use only one site, and when I look at the smartlist each item has only the site listed as the site ID, but it is clearly listing it for hte number of sites I have

Again, thank you for the help.  I am brand new to GP and am still getting used to it. Let me know if you need any further information.

I have worked with MRP for a few years, but have not seen anything like you mentioned.   It must be the demand.   Are you doing monthly, weekly or daily buckets to enter forecasts?  What version of GP are you on?   Do you have reorder levels entered in?   Do you have fixed order quantity for the items in the Item Resource Planning window?   Let us know these and we can go from there.   MRP will net out every item per day (or defined bucket) by site.   Maybe give us a numeric example of some of the numbers in the fields I asked about to further describe how you entered info.
