Password Administration

We are currently on Sl 2011 FP1. I am trying to set up a login for our HelpDesk to be able to reset passwords. When I give the new user id the Administrators group, it will not allow the new login to change the password. All other fields can be changed but the password field will not even appear when a users id is pulled up. Am I doing something incorrectly? I do not want to give our helpdesk the Sysadmin id.

Thanks!

Lisa

    Lisa,

If you are using Windows authentication then users do not have a password.  All permissions are granted through the access rights screens.  So, you could set up a group for the Helpdesk, give rights to the user maintenance screen to that group and make this user a member of that group or, of course, you could just grant rights to that screen at the user level.

And...to add to Rick's thought...if you turn on Windows Authentication, you don't have to worry about SL passwords...

Thanks Rick for the response... We don't use Windows authentication unfortunately and don't see that happening anytime soon :(

After playing around with this, its seems you are just out of luck.  I set up a new user and gave that user full rights to the 95.260.00 screen.  When the screen opens (while logged in as that user) it displays the password field but as soon as I select a user, that field goes away.  It does appear that Solomon/Dynamics SL only exposes that field if the user is SYSADMIN regardless of the user's rights to that screen.  I can appreciate what you were trying to do but the designers are not letting that happen.

    Lisa,

Found something that might be useful...while I was looking for something else :)

Customize the Solomon.ini file....I found this in an article on "undocumented Solomon ini settings"

    [Miscellaneous]

    AllowPasswordChange

    Default Value = No

    Valid Entries = No, Yes

By setting this flag to Yes, then if using SQL Authentication, allow any user with Edit, Insert, Delete, or Initialization permissions to access the Password field in User Maintenance (95.260.00)

So I think it would look like this:

    [Miscellaneous]

    AllowPasswordChange=Yes

Thanks so much Chris! I will certainly try it out and see if it works :)
