How can we evaluate Nav from a Project management point of view?

Hi all,

i need to implement for two legal entities ( manufactoring and retail) microsoft Nav as the PM.

Before to go through manuals and Microsoft resources,  i would appreciate to get an understanding of the Microsoft Dynamics product and its’ related technologies from an implementation point of view.

I had exposure to the modules before but i assume that is not enought .

Is there anybody that can give advise about:

Which modules are more critical to implement and why ( weaknessees)

Which modules are more straight forward to implement and why( strenghts)

What are the most critical and relevant integrations between the modules ( i.e. inventory reports are under Finance)

Which modules have the major / minor risks to keep in consideration during an implementation process

And finally what kind of knowledge of NAV a Pm should have and at what level ( sources?)

Thank you all  for your time.

NAV is almost a complete solution for many businesses.

Refer below link to know about the main modules in NAV

    Link 01

    Link 02

Which modules are more critical to implement and why ( weaknessees)

Almost all the modules are very critical to implement because one mistake in setup will ruin your implementation and may be have to re do the works of months. However to overcome this you can run this in a test database and check all the scenarios and get a confirmation form your team before moving to live environment.

Which modules are more straight forward to implement and why( strenghts)

It totally depend on the business logic. If you are doing only a buying and selling in a company then your logic would be simple and it is pretty easy to implement. But with manufacturing coming into the picture it is bit complex to map your business logic with NAV and you need to have expert ideas on this.

Which modules have the major / minor risks to keep in consideration during an implementation process

Reporting and other customization need to take into consideration and reporting will take lot of time. Need to understand what is the requirement of the end user and need to list down all the data fields they must required. If you didn't modify the system in order to capture these data during the customization phase you will end up in a big mess at the report development stage. Therefore need to analyze each and every report and every column of a report before you start your implementation.

And finally what kind of knowledge of NAV a Pm should have and at what level ( sources?)

Read the below book : https://www.packtpub.com/application-development/implementing-microsoft-dynamics-nav-2013

In this site you will find may books which help you do understand NAV.

Hope you got a brief idea.

RE: How can we evaluate Nav from a Project management point of view?

    hi,

dynamics nav is a product with many integrated modules, which cannot be seperated. Nav is intended to be used in a couple of different areas: manufacturing, trade, medicine, ...

Nav knowledge a PM should have: the more the better, especially the technical part (important for communication with the developers). but in first place a PM should know the way to do, the business processes and the administration, the setup.

a good start is reading a book, e.g. "Implementing Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013" (Laura Nicolàs Lorente). also search for "dynamics nav 2013" on youtube. there are many, many training videos.

a big thing during a nav project is always the financial part, the setup of the general ledger, the VAT setup, ...

also important: most clients want much, much customization in the reporting area. it's important to plan enough time for that part and ... do a big and detailed requirements analysis! it's horrible for the developers, if there are inaccurate specifications.
