Microsoft CRm On-Premise SQL Licensing

I am hoping maybe some partners/orgs that have gone through this themselves can help out.

Currently have a client that is on Micrsoft CRM 2011 On-Premise. They have the database on SQL Server 2008. They also have Dynamics SL 7.0 on that SQL Server and will need to keep it there. The company has 100 employees and have 100 SQL 2008 CALs.

They would like to upgrade to CRM 2015. Must they purchase both SQL Server 2012(or 2014) and additional SQL CALs for the new version (30 of 100 employees are CRM users)?

They just purchased the 100 SQL 2008 CALs a few months ago to be compliant with some application and are wondering if a $10k expense to get SQL2014(and CALs) is the necessary minimum in order to upgrade CRM.

Thanks!

    Dear Rocky,

In terms of upgrading your existing SQL server licenses, you will probably want to consult Microsoft or Microsoft partner licensing specialist to fully understand the considerations for moving your your existing licenses to SQL server 2012 or SQL server 2014. Having a software assurance  agreement or an enterprise agreement will affect your options.

About software requirements for CRM 2015, please refer to : technet.microsoft.com/.../hh699671.aspx

    Hello Rocky,

This is my understanding of Licensing for MS SQL and I hope it will guide you.  I'm a registered Microsoft partner and I once ask to my regional manager how SQL licenses work.  Please feel free to ask to a Licensing Partner for verification.

The count for SQL CALs is onde on a per device or per user basis (depending on the type of CAL you got) no matter the number of applications you run in SQL Server.  For example, if you have one user that uses SharePoint, CRM and SL only one SQL CAL is required.

Now regarding CRM, if the 30 CRM users already have a CAL for Dynamics SL, you are covered with those SQL CALs, no need to get extra CALs.  If those 30 users are different, then you will need to buy more CALs.

The problem is that Dynamics CRM 2015 requires SQL 2012 or above in order to work.  Therefore you won't be able to install it using SQL Server 2008.

That being said, you need to upgrade your Server and CAL versión.  There are basically two options:

    1.  If your client bought Software Assurance for the Server and SQL CALs, at the moment of the license purchase and it is still active, you won't need to get new licenses., just download SQL Server 2012 or 2014 and perform and upgrade. (Be aware that you must check the other application requirements, we don't want to break anything during the ugprade).

    2. If your client just bought the licenses without Software Assurance, then it will be require to buy everything again.  A SQL Server 2008 CAL is not good for a newer SQL Server versión (2012 or 2014), only for older verions (2005, 2008).  Keep in mind that if it is a recent purchase, probably your client bought 2012 CALs so you may be covered.

Just one more thing.  You can also get a "Per server" SQL Server license. In this case you need to buy one SQL Server license for every two cores that the server has.  There is a breaking point that must be taken into account on which of the two options is better (Server+CALs or Server Only).  For a 4 Core server, I think the breaking point is around 40 CALs,

    I hope this helps

    Ronald
