Wha is the best way to do the upgrade from GP 10 with SQL 2005 to GP 2010 with SQ 2008 on another new server?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello,

I just got a new 64bit Dell Server, and want to move our current GP 10 with SQL 2005 to this new server which will run Win2k8 R2 with SQL 2008 R2. We are also running Business Portal/Project Accounting on another server, they will also be upgraded too.  What is the best way to do this GP 2010 upgrade?

Thanks very much for your help.

Regards,

Kevin

    Hi Mohammad,

So you are suggesting me that I still run GP 2010 on the current server, only move SQL server to new Dell server. But GP 2010 needs to be running on the new server, the current server running GP 10 has a lot of apps running on it, that is why we got the new server.

We are running GP 10 with SP5 currently, and Business Portal/PDK with the latest SPs. I read that Business Portal 5.1 will run on 64 bit windows.

My plan is  as following, please let me know if it works:

    on the new server:

    1), install SQL 2008 R2

2), install GP 2010, create all Company databases,

    3), install SP1,

on the current GP 10 server:

    4), backup all company databases

    on the new server:

5), restore all company databases from the backups

    6), install Busines Portal 5.1

    7), install PDK

SInce we have a lot of customized reports, and windows, the most concern for me are those customized reports and windows will work on the new server or not because the SQL server version change and restore, and user security issue is also the concern.

Thanks very much for your help.

Few issues you need to keep in mind:

    1. Business Portal is not working as expected on 64 bit windows yet.

    2. Dynamics GP 10.0 Requires SP5 to work with SQL Server 2008 R2 and GP 2010 Requires SP1.

Now I would perform the upgrade using the following sequence:

    1. Upgrade GP 10.0 to GP 2010 SP1 on your current server.

    2. Install SQL Server 2008 R2 with the latest service packs on your DELL server.

    3. Move the databases from your current server to the new DELL.

    4. Synchronize the users on the SQL level between two servers.

    Switch servers and enjoy!
