electronic filing of 1099's

We are new users to GP and are on version 10.  I heard that if we want/need to file our 1099's with the IRS electronically we have to purchase the software.  Is this really true?  I thought it would be provided with our maintenance agreement.  Does anyone have any vendors they have worked with that they can recommend?

    Re: electronic filing of 1099's

W2 Mate, W2 and 1099 software, offers a comprehensive solution for importing, preparing, processing, printing and E-filing 1099 forms and W2 Forms. The 1099 reporting software supports unlimited number of companies, employees, recipients, 1099 forms and W2 forms. Using the 1099 e-file option, the user can e-file 1099-MISC, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV 1099-R and W2 forms for unlimited number of recipients.

With Option #3 (Import W2/1099 Forms Data) you can import data for unlimited number of W2 and 1099 forms. Importing data into W2 Mate is very easy, fast and reliable.  W2/1099 forms data can be imported from CSV (comma separated value) that is the most common format used in order to transfer data between different types of databases. Most software and database applications will allow you to export W2 and 1099 data into CSV format, which can then be imported into W2 Mate.

For tax year 2008 (forms filed in calendar year 2009), the due date to E-File 1099 forms is March 31, 2009. This includes, but not limited to, 1099-MISC forms, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV and 1099-R forms. Persons or businesses required to file information returns electronically may be subject to penalties for failure to file or include correct information if they do not follow the IRS E-Filing instructions. A complete list of 1099 Deadlines is available on our website (www.realtaxtools.com) or by visiting the IRS website.

A free demo of the software can be downloaded by going to the: 1099 Software Download.

One if the advantages to GreenShades is it can also file all of you Payroll reports electronically (if you use the Payroll module in GP). It will file both quarterly and annual reports at the federal, state, and local level. It is very simple to use, all wizard driven.

    I would definitely recommend it.

I used AMS (1099etc) last year and they worked out fine. They were recomended by the IRS, and have been using them since we were using QB.

gp does not have an electronic file.   I suggest my  clients use greenshades to file.  Its not that expensive

Have you made any headway on this?  We need to submit our 1099's with the IRS electronically and I am not sure how to go about it.
