Costing of consumable parts (inventory vs. non-inventory)

Hi all,

From everything I've read:

  • Inventory is a must if you want costing / GL entries on items
  • Non-inventory lacks most financial transactions

I work in discrete manufacturing and assembly. We manufacture products with screws, nuts bolts, that we:

  • Need in a BOM
  • Needs to roll up cost
  • Needs to transact on GL account
  • Needs to be included in planning worksheet
  • Do not want to count / track

We have set these items to type of inventory , but that is problematic, as now we have 1000s of small assembly hardware to track in inventory.

If we set to non-inventory, we lose all financial implications of these transactions.

Is there a feature in BC to provide a happy medium? We are a discrete manufacturer that has many small kanban items that we need to buy and validate for finance, but not track inventory of.

Thank you

Hi, Unfortunately, I feel like the only option without customization is to use Non-Inventory.
Below is the official description from Microsoft.

Hopefully other experts can give you better advice.

    Thanks.

What is the issue you are experiencing?

I created a non-inventory part, gave it a cost of $10, added it to a BOM w/ Routing Link Code, then output units on the linked routing step.  The Non-Inventory Item was "consumed," and my production order has the cost showing in the Item Ledger Entries impacting the production order.  Notice there is a separate column added to track Non-Inventory costs on the entries.
