Can we increase the size of the string size of Extended Data Type RetailPackageId in AX 2012 Retail

Hello,

I would like to know some expert opinion on increasing the string size of standard Extended Data Type "RetailPackageId" in AX 2012 R3 for Retail. Crrently the EDT has a size of 10 characters for String and we would like to increase it to 15. Will there be any dire consequences of changing the Standard EDT? Kindly advise post cahnges steps to be taken care if any.

Hi Vidya,

If you change it, all places where it is used will be affected.

If possible, you can create a new EDT (with a larger size) to replace it.

Hi Blue Wang,

Thank you for your suggestion. However, if I create a new EDT , how do i Update it to all standard filed using old EDT since I am not aware of all the tables using it. Using a new EDT will involve a lot of customization in this case i believe. So which one would be more preferable like increasing the size of existing or creating a new one?

Hi Vidya,

First of all, Yes you can increase the size of standard EDT. And you can create new EDT also.

In case of new EDT, Following things you have to ensure before changing the size.

1) All the tables where you have used standard EDT, specifically for customized reports where you have used size 10 you have to update all that tables with new EDT.

2) you need to sync tables, to effect changes. Sometimes in forms where EDT is used gives error it will resolved after compilation.

If it is ok for you to use existing EDT with new size then better to use that to avoid customization. But must sync after updating EDT size.
