GP10 on SQL2016

Posted on by 185

Hi,

I have a client who is running GP10 on SQL2016 Enterprise.  They now want to upgrade GP to 2016.  I know that SQL 2016 is not supported for GP10 and that when I run Utilities it may not recognize the SQL version and not be able to upgrade.

Has anyone ever ran into this scenario or have any idea how I can get around this issue so I can perform the upgrade ?  (I have not attempted it yet )

Thanks

The problem is that GP10 is running on SQL 2016 which is unsupported so I do not think I will be able ti uograde to GP 2013 because this version is also not compatible with SQL 2016.

The issue you are facing is a serious one. You can upgrade GP 10.0 to GP 2013, but GP 2013 Utilities is not compatible with SQL Server 2016. The only way around this is to take the GP 10.0 databases and restore them on SQL Server 2008 R2 - You will need to first change the database compatibility level for all GP databases to 100 before backing them up and restoring them onto SQL Server 2008 R2. You will also need to apply GP 10.0 Service Pack 5 in order for GP 10.0 Utilities to be able to run and also recommended prior to upgrading to GP 2013.

Now that you have your GP 10.0 databases on SQL Server 2008 R2, you can run the upgrade to GP 2013 R2 (12.00.1745). Once you upgrade to GP 2013 R2, you can then, once again, back up and restore these databases onto SQL Server 2016 again, then run the GP 2016 upgrade.

In order to complete the transfer of databases between servers (in both cases), I suggest you take a look at KB article 878449.

You are going to need to do this upgrade in two hops. GP10 to GP 2013 and then to GP 2016 R2. This is why you image your servers so you can create one image with SQL 2012 and then one with SQL Server 2016. I would check out all the upgrade paths to the exact versions you have and will have. It can easily be done just follow the rules.

Remember to uprade your modified forms and reports along the way.

    Hi,

I have not done this specific upgrade, but I have not had any problems with an upgrade when I ran utilities on a version that is not 'supported' to run on that version. For instance, I upgraded GP version 9 with SQL 2012 with no problems.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
