Texting in D365 Marketing Trial

We are in trial for Marketing. 

Have created a couple of email based journeys and have had success uploading contacts, etc.
 
We are struggling however with testing text capabilities.  We are attempting to use the preloaded toll free # that comes with trial.  We send text message and get message that it was sent successfully but recipient does not receive it.
 
Have tried a variety of recipients, but no luck on anyone actually receiving.  
 
Query - do we need to setup an outside text message platform in order to test/use functionality? 
The pricing for Marketing indicates that it includes 1000 SMS per month, but what exactly does that get you if you separately have to buy a texting platform?

    Hi,

    It is recommended to use text message in journey. And then in the report of the text message you can see all the sending status.

     

     
    In addition, according to this official document, it may be due to your phone number being filtered by the carrier so that the recipients don't receive the messages. It is recommended that you verify your toll-free phone number.
    Also, Toll-free numbers are not capable of sending or receiving messages to/from countries/regions outside of US, CA, and PR.

    There is a preloaded number that comes with trial for sending texts, but so far have been unable for any recipients to receive anything.  I attempt to add a new text sender number with an Azure plan and get this message:
