Global option set limitation

Hello everyone,

In our company we use MS Dynamics 2015 on premises and there is a requirement to create global option set with 700 unique values.

I have two questions: Is there a system limitation on maximum number of values for global option sets? Is it possible to upload somehow all 700 values into existing global option set?

Thank you in advance!

    Hi Ivaylo,

There is no documentation available on the exact number of values for an option set. Some says its 300 , some says its 500.

but whatever it is , if try to insert this huge amount of values , you might succeed however when it comes to using that field on the form , views , etc - the system will die.

to overcome this situation - we always prepare creating a lookup field , that is creating a new entity and inserting data into it which is will be a better solution and can be maintained easily too. addition of more new values is easy and there woudn't be any limit.

I think, you can not add 700 options in option set.

As per your requirement, You have to create a custom entity that store 700 records and create lookup of custom entity in other entities.

    Hi Ivaylo,

This is not a good practice , avoid to create optionset which having more than 10 options . Normal user can not maintain optionset when its having 700 options.

Instead optionset field create lookup fields for the same so that normal user can add or remove any time from lookup.

Imagine when user will search particular record , user need to scroll down all 700 records , if you create lookup then you have inbuilt search option in the lookup field.

Its recommended not to create global optionset with maximum  number of options , no matter its supported or not supported.

    Hi,

As suggested above, it is not recommended to create an optionset with these many options. Its not user friendly and will impact the performance. You should create a reference entity to achieve your requirement.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your answers!

This option set is a mapped field that is populated with data from external ERP system and users will do not select options manually.

I will try this solution: "You can use the Solution Translation tool Export/Import, to import what so ever list from excel to the global/Local option set, just create the number of "Items" in the option set, then export the translation, then edit the xml in excel Copy/Paste the list values then import back the translation to the solution, you will get all the value with out need to edit them manually"

    Hi,

As you are on CRM 2015, you could also try OptionsSet Manager Tool. archive.codeplex.com

    Hope this helps.

    Hi everyone,

I've tried Options Set Manager Tool - very useful toll, but I was unable to import values with .csv file.

The out-of-the-box Solution Translation Export/Import method works fine - I've created 670 values in one global option set and the system is still alive without any performance issues.

    Problem is solved.

    Thank you everyone for cooperation!

Glad to hear that you found the solution but never mind you are not following the best practices .
