Guide for implementing Dynamics 365 enterprise edition.

Posted on by

Hello

Currently we are at stage where we can deploy our  sandbox in LCS.

I would like to know the following and sincerely appreciate anyone responding to these queries.

1.On premises vs Azure cloud - which one is better from cost perspective.

I do see a version saying that TCO total cost of ownership for Azure is better than on premises, but fail to understand the rational behind it.

In my view on premises does have a heavy cost of 1 time hardware procurement , but is that not better than reoccurring azure cost of Azure subscriptions.

2. I wanted me and my development team to have a VSTS development experience, but I understand from my partner that best economical way we can have development environment is to ask each team to deploy their devbox in LCS and then download the VHD of dev box . Will this not lead to individual dev environment for all developers. What is the most economical way to have integrated dev environment like we use to have with tfs in dax 2012.

3. Any material or guide for step by step implementation of D365 and moving data from Siebel

4.Any admin material showing how to deploy manage and maintain AX systems especially

a. Managing builds, axrunbooks , updates  &

b. Security for developers - How to use data security framework.

Is there a better way to keep prod data, uat data and dev box data synch. Can we leverage on some synch mechanism here. I am thinking of setting another azure db, where skimmed data will be pushed from prod and then this az db will replicate with dev box dbs.

Read the heading please, clearly states d365 enterprise edition.

All of above facts are addressed, right now all I am trying to understand is how to integrate the local db's of the developer to ensure that they are working on same data.

Your mention of "Siebel" gave me a pause.

Are you implementing accounting (Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations) or CRM (Dynamics 365 for sales)?

These are completely different and distinct products, without much shared expertise. This group is for the former, not the latter.

    Regarding your point

    2) Each developer should have it's own DEV box. You can or download a virtual machine and run it locally on desktops/laptops or deploy machines on Azure. The first option requires good hardware with fast SSD and sufficient memory. The Azure option will have a pricing based on usage hours. Note that Visual Studio licenses are not included in any Dynamics 365 license.

Can you please let me know how to ensure that all local db's in these individual dev boxes have same data

Thanks a lot for prompt response.

While point no.3 and no. 4 is addressed , I am still struggling with point 1 and 2.

Would appreciate if you can review and provide your valuable inputs.

    1. There is no way to determine which among azure and on premise has less tco. Is there any way we can compare CAL cost vs Azure subrscription cost. I was doing some research but unable to find data about which is more feasible. Even if on premise is more feasible, question of will MS release all of its cloud d365 on the on premise model.

    2. The only way to have integrated dev environment is to go for azure subscription couple it with VSTS, control cost by starting and stopping machines. Any estimate on how much would it cost going for this environment for say 3 developers.

The other economically feasible dev environment is to to have each developer download vhd and have his/her own dev box.  But then how can the team of developers work in isolated dev boxes. Is there no way we can have visual studio in their dev boxes with TFS and then all these isolated dev boxes would  get integrated via TFS.

    Hi Mav,

It would be better to split your post in one per question. Now it is too broad and there will be less overview which questions are already answered in a certain stage or not.

I will try to put in my comments. I will keep it quite general.

    1) You have to consider that running on Azure, the subscription fee includes software like SQL server, Windows server. Also the environment will be administered by Microsoft. When running on-premise, you have to take care of licenses, system administration, SQL database administration, environment security, backups, high availability etc yourself. Compare all related costs and then see what would be the best for you.

    3) You can use data management features in D365 to import data. I don't have experience with Siebel, so cannot make any more suggestions on this topic.

    4) There is documentation on the internet. Start on this page: docs.microsoft.com/.../dev-itpro. In addition there is a Dynamics learning portal with training.

If you have some specific detailed questions, please create new questions. If something related to this reply was not clear, don't hesitate to continue on this thread.
