Warehouse management

Posted on by 9

Our company has two different sites set up with their own chain of warehouses that need to set up warehouse management with opposing requirements.

Site 1 needs to only reserve inventory by qty. at the point of sale.

Site 2 is required to reserve inventory in advance of the order completion by specific serial number.

Is there anyway to make the system allow this, even if it would take unique development, or is site 2 just stuck reserving inventory by a shared excel file forever?

It sounds like you’re tackling some unique challenges with inventory management across your sites. For Site 1, reserving inventory by quantity at the point of sale is pretty straightforward, but Site 2’s requirement for reserving by specific serial numbers ahead of order completion does complicate things a bit.

You might not have to rely on a shared Excel file for Site 2 indefinitely. It’s definitely feasible to develop a customized solution to handle these specific needs. I'd recommend considering a tailored approach through a specialized storage facility software, which can be configured to meet the diverse requirements of both sites. Many modern warehouse management systems offer the flexibility to set up different rules for inventory management that can be customized per site. It could be worthwhile to consult with a software provider who can tailor their system to manage these distinct processes efficiently.

By going this route, you can ensure that both of your sites operate optimally without having to compromise on your inventory management strategy.

    RE: Warehouse management

    Hi JaegLA,

If i understand correctly, you want to reserve the sales line different inventory dimension for each site. For example you want reserve one item by site and warehouse and another item by site, warehouse and serial number.

There is no possible with standard D365 system because the reservation hierarchies are followed through products, also i do not think so the system allow development for this topic. But when you enter the sales line or journal etc, if your sale in site 2 you can choose the serial number in sales line. Or you take a development like the sales line's invent dimension is equal to site2, the system could want sales line's serial number.

I hope it works for you.
