Resource Planning for Projects within BC

What is the optimum way to plan and organise Resources for Projects (jobs) within BC? Ideally would like an overall view by Resource and you could drag/drop the project task by day (different timeline) to another resource. Is this achievable in BC?

You can use the project planning lines for scheduling resources but if you want a simple drag and drop function that isn't available out of the box.

Insight works has a free app called Graphical Scheduler: Free Graphical Scheduler for Business Central

You can use this for simple drag and drop scheduling. It's advertised as being for manufacturing but you can use it for projects too. They have a lot of videos and information on setting it up.

In standard Business Central Projects, you can plan resources through Project Planning Lines, assign resources to specific project tasks, define dates/quantities, and review resource capacity/availability. However, the exact drag-and-drop visual planning board by Resource vs. Day/Timeline that you described is not available in standard Project Management. You would typically need a Power BI/Power Apps solution, an extension, or another scheduling tool for that Gantt-style experience.

Hi, the planning itself is native but the visual part you describe is not. In BC the plan sits on the Project Planning Lines — type Budget, a resource, dates and quantity. That is what feeds resource availability, so first make sure the resources have capacity defined on Resource Capacity, otherwise the availability figures show nothing useful.
For the overall picture there is the Resource Availability page and the allocated per project matrix, and you can switch the period to day, week or month. It tells you who is over or under booked, but it is a matrix, not a timeline. Moving a task to someone else is just changing the Resource No. on the planning line — works fine, only not by dragging.
A proper Gantt with drag and drop doesn't exist in standard BC, that needs something on top. Analysis mode or Power BI at least covers the reporting side.

Hello,
In standard Business Central, the best approach is to set up each person/machine as a Resource, maintain their Resource Capacity, and assign them to Projects (Jobs) through Project Planning Lines, where you define the resource, planning date, and planned hours; the Resource Capacity Matrix can then give you a day/week/month capacity view, and the Resource Utilization report helps compare capacity against usage. However, the visual experience you describe—resources as rows with project tasks on a timeline that you can drag/drop between dates and resources—is not available out of the box in Business Central Projects. For that requirement, I would keep BC Project Planning Lines as the underlying planning data and use an AppSource scheduling extension or a custom scheduling board that updates those lines when tasks are moved. Microsoft does provide this type of drag-and-drop Schedule Board in products such as Dynamics 365 Project Operations/Field Service, but that is a separate capability from standard Business Central.
