CRM 2016 online portal add-on conflict with existing ADX 7 solution

Posted on by

We have recently upgraded to Dynamics CRM Online 2016 Update 1 and looking forward to evaluate the online portal add-on (based on ADX 8.x).   We are currently using the ADX 7 on-premise solution for our customer portal.

We are unable to enable the portal add-on, and the following KB article explains that we cannot install the 8.x portal for an existing version of 7.x portal.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3165165

  • Installing a version 7.x or lower portal in a Dynamics CRM/Dynamics 365 organization that already contains a version 8.x portal is unsupported and highly discouraged as it can lead to a loss of functionality and may render the version 8.x portal unable to be upgraded at a later date. Likewise, installing a version 8.x portal in a Dynamics CRM/Dynamics 365 organization that already contains a version 7.x or lower portal is also unsupported. More information regarding upgrades for existing version 7.x portals will be provided at a later date.

I'm wondering how other people dealt with this limitation when switching from ADX 7 to the portal-add (ADX 8)?

An option is to uninstall ADX 7 before installing ADX 8, but this presents too much risk in production environment, specially if we have to perform a rollback.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

    Hi Moid,

Dynamics 365 Portals (aka CRM Portals) is a SaaS service starting from Version 8. Adxstudio 7.x is an On-Premises version.  Currently there's no Adxstudio 8.x version available.  Please make sure you don't upgrade your CRM Online instance any further as the existing Adxstudio 7.x is not compatible with Dynamics 365 (8.2.X) yet.

Your options at this stage are:

    1. Continue to use the On-Premises Adxstudio and upgrade when On-Premises versions released
    2. Clone CRM instance, remove Adxstudio, install Dynamics 365 Portals, migrate data (delta only), and swap the CRM instances
    3. Start from a clean CRM instance, install Dynamics 365 Portals, migrate data, swap instances

    Cheers,

    Nadeeja
