frx registration

Posted on by 630

I have FRx 6.7.2013 instaleld on a new windows 7 32bit machine. FRx was working fine on the previous XP machine. I don't have the registration information written down since it was my understanding that FRx pulls that information automatically.

Now that I have FRx installed on the windows 7 machine, it warns me that it is in evaluation mode and that it must be registered. I setup everything in the settings identical to how it was on the windows XP machine. The registration informatino is not populating.

Also, I am unable to login to FRx now. What settings am I missing? What could cause this?

I thought I would go back to the XP machine and get the registration information and the registration info has just disappeared from the XP machine and it is acting exactly the same as the windows 7 machine is now.

I tried reinstalling and I made sure that sysdata was set to local path during install and then I changed it. Still nothing.

Thanks,

Justin

The GP DSN will encrypt the password so you would not want to use the same DSN for GP and FRx. The access databases are not involved here. Try creating a brand new DSN under the system tab and use SQL server authentication. Then go into SQL and create that account. I use something like username:FRX password:user. In SQL map access to the company databases for this new account using DYNGRP.

Also, it may be important to note that I setup the System DSN for our Great Plains installation. GP works great. I didn't know that FRx used the same DSN. In either case, we are still unable to login to FRx  and we are able to login to GP just fine.

I checked ODBC Data Source Administrator on the XP computer. The DSN is listed under the System DSN tab. I added that exactly to the new windows 7 computer when I initially set it up so that does not seem to be the issue. Now I have both computers setup with the system DSN for SQL and each of them act the same when I type in the system password. Looking in the sysdata folder, there are two access databases. Is it possible those are being used and that I may need to configure a DSN for those? I am not sure how to tell if I need to use those or not. I see no reference to them in the User DSN tab or any DSN tab for that matter.

    Thanks,

    Justin

    Re: frx registration

FRx uses a DSN to connect to the server. Go into Frx and then Company->Information->System Specific tab and then for your company check the DSN. Does it use Windows credentials or SQL server? Now it is possible that you do not even have a DSN for FRx on this new computer. Go to to the XP computer and check to see what DSN is being used and then replicate it on this new computer.

    Re: frx registration

    Thank you for replying.

I think there was an issue with the sysdata folder. I restored a backup(it was on a server in a network location) and then the registration information suddently appeared. Now I have a copy of the registration information and I am back to where I started.

Now I have one remaining issue. Then the user launches FRx, it prompts for a username and password. The username is what it has always been but when we type in the password, it just reprompts again and won't allow access. I can't figure out why the credentials don't work. We are able to log in as administrator but the password is certainly not our SA password for our SQL install so this makes me think that authentication for SQL is local. Can you help me get this user to the point where he can log in to FRx?

    Thanks,

    Justin

    Re: frx registration

The registration comes from within your SYSDATA folder. Hopefully you were using a shared SYSDATA folder. Just point this new istallation to that folder and you should be all set. If the SYSDATA folder only existed on this computer you will need to copy it back to this machine. Be advsised that if folder names have changed you will need to make other changes. It sounds like somehow you blew away your SYSDATA folder. When you go back to the XP computer find out where it thinks the SYSDATA folder was. If it does not know, search your hard drive and then point it to that location on the XP computer. if you cannot find it at all I hope you have a backup.
