What is the difference in use between Segments and Subscription Marketing List in the Customer Journey, as both of them doing the same job in the customer journey?

Both Marketing Lists and Segments exist in a dynamic and a static flavor. On top of that Segments can have the compound nature in which they combine several other segments in a logical operation.
Marketing lists:
Can be static or dynamic
Demographic queries only (Have NO access to Marketing Interactions!)
Member selection based = Static: Lookup and Advanced Find (Fetch XML) operations, Dynamic: Advanced Find Query (Fetch XML)
Used in Sales activities and related "basic marketing capabilities" like campaigns and quick campaigns
Typically used by Sales Reps
Special use case in Marketing app for subscription management
Segments:
Can be static, dynamic, compound.
Demographic queries & Interaction based queries
Member selection based = Static: filtered lists (future also advanced find), Dynamic: Query builder
Used for marketing audience building driving automated customer journeys
Typically used by Marketer
Special use case: Segments can load members from static marketing lists
Future outlook: We will be enhancing the Segment capabilities with every release to have full rich query options, like Fetch XML and more (we are not quite there yet). The investments in Unser experience and use case integration lie all on segmentation.
I would say that segments are dynamic and based on criteria where as Marketing list is static.
