Microsoft Dynamics GP (Archived)

Local GP Installation with copy of Live database.

Greetings,

I have benefited from the response to my first post on this forum and hope to be lucky this time too. I do not really know if the topic actually explains my issue. I want to install  a copy of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 on my computer for troubleshooting user problems before the implementation is done on the live company database. What i mean is, i want my local installation be exactly like the live company. What steps can i take to go through the installation that my local copy behaves exactly like the Live company. I would really appreciate suggestions on this. Thanks.

    Dear Ms. Nana

    Creating a test environment for Dynamics GP is a common issue that most businesses face, it is quite essential as you may want to test various issues either before going live or on an continuous base. Therefore, you have several options to choose from;

1- Fabrikam might be a good option for some businesses as it already has live data that can provide good environment for testers on several business modules.

2- Another good option is to create a test company from GP Utilities. Consider Knowledge Base article 871973 for further details

        support.microsoft.com/.../871973

Please note that this option has a test limitation, as certain test subjects may affect the "Dynamics" DB, affecting all live companies.

3- I highly recommend creating a separate test environment, on which you need to re-install GP Dynamics and Database server. You can backup and restore your live company database to the test machine to ensure similar live company configuration and data. This will give you the ability to test any issue without being concerned about your live company data.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. I have followed all the KB articles you suggested but i do not think it addresses my situation quite well. Perhaps i have to explain myself well. Currently we deploy Microsoft Dynamics over our local area Network with access created for all the clients. Now i do not want my local installation to run on the network. I want to be able to practice even at home when i am not on the company's network. That is why i want to make use of the live database on my local copy. At least i can practice with that and when i go to work it becomes easier for me when i am logged on to the companies GP. I already have GP installed. Must i install SQL Server or just the express version. How can i have all the logins on my local copy. I want it to behave just like the one installed on the company's network. Thanks once again and hope to get more replies soon.

Step 1) Have the same version of SQL on your laptop as on your server. Having the Express version on your laptop is fine just make sure the SQL versions match

Step 2) In KB878449 you will find a capture login script. You must run this against your production instance and then run the results against the SQL instance on your laptop

Step 3) Copy your DYNAMICS and company databases from production to laptop. I prefer to detach and attach but using a backup will work as well

Step 4) Passwords will not carry over. You will need to go to Tools->Setup->System user and change the passwords.

    Dear Ms. Nana

You need to install SQL Server on your laptop, the express version will do just fine as well. After installing the SQL Server, you need to create a new data source (ODBC) to link the application with the express version

On your laptop, go to ODBC data source administrator

1- On the USER DSN tab, "ADD" a new ODBC > Choose "SQL Server Native Client" > Name, Description, and choose the DataBase Server (As you name it)

2- Choose the authentication method > Next

3- Go through the next two screens checkboxes > Finish

GO TO GP Utilities, On the server Field, you will find the ODBC you just created. Go through the configuration of a new company. Once finished, Backup and restore your live company database on the new company created (On SQL Express)

Now, when you open the GP on your laptop, on the "Server" field, choose the ODBC you created, and you will be logged on a different database server with your live company data.

Please be cautious when you get back to work and work on your live company "not the test one" to change the server.

Looks like Richard Wheeler and Mohamoud respond to questions at the same time...thus they are both posting similar responses....which are correct.

I would like to add, if you use the same SA password on your local SQL install, you do not need to worry about the passwords script.  Yes, that means that only sa will be able to log in to your local machine or laptop but the sa user in GP will allow all the testing you need to accomplish.

Another approach is to install a second instance of SQL and then install GP against that instance on the server.  You can then detach, copy, and attach your live dbs to the second instance (detach the db's created on the second instance and rename them first, then copy your live dbs to the same address and attach them).  Copy Dynamics as well as your company dbs.  Now, with separate ODBCs, all users could check out the converted system.
