Product Configurator - AX2012 R3

Hi

Can anyone help?

What is the correct way Microsoft intend users to do maintenance of a configured product?  Say I configure a product specifying various attributes and this creates a BOM and Route.  A "Config" will be associated with this configuration and I have the "re-use" option set.  Then say I make changes to my route associated with this model.  Later I configure another item using the same attributes as before and because I have "re-use" checked the system will pick up the "Config" generated earlier even although this had a different route.  This cannot be right?  What am I missing in my understanding?

How should I do maintenance of a configured product?

Thanks in advance

    Hi CEL 1967

We have implemented a "Reset configuration reuse" action in the Product configuration model details form. It is placed in top of the General tab.

It allows you to reset the reuse on a component by component basis.

The intention is to allow you to determine when new BOM and Routes are required, e.g. because you replaced a BOM line or changed the resource requirements on a route operation.

    Thanks,

    Sverre

    Hi Sverre!

Could you make this date sensitive? So that is a configuration is made prior to an activation on a route it will automatically get a new config?

Or if changing active route on an item that is configurable and has re-use active ask if the user want to also reset the configurations?

    Hi Fredrik

The Product configurator produces a configuration with a BOM and a route. The BOM and route versions are approved, made active and with no to or from dates. After the configuration the BOM and route are handled as any BOM and route in AX and can be edited or deleted. This is done through the BOM and route forms, NOT from the Product configurator.

So in short. Once a configuration is done neither the BOM nor the route can be changed from the Product configurator.

If you want to change the output from the Product configurator you have to make the changes in the product model.

Naturally the reuse and reset-reuse functions have an impact on when new configurations, BOM's and routes are created.

I hope this answers your question, but if not please let me know!

    Thanks,

    Sverre

Thanks Sverre. I'd give you a confirmed answer on that one.  Total meltdown on my end.  I might not get this right, but even though the model changes the reuse feature will use an existing config as long as the answers are duplicated from a previous.

What I meant was that if there are changes to the base route/BOM in a model and a new one is active, all configurations should generate new BOMs and Routes in any scenario.

The reset-reuse is great.... as long as you remember to run it.  I was hoping for some reminder on this when a new model/route/BOM is activated.

    Hi Fredrik,

You are right that we could consider providing a notification of some sort to help remembering to run the reset reuse.

    Thanks Again,

    Sverre
