Recycle Dynamics CRM 2016 product key ?

Hello,

I have installed "Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 Server" - FullServer on a Windows Server 2012 R2 PC.

Now I want to redo the deployment and split the FullServer to 2 FrontEnd and 2 BackEnd Servers.

Now, I only have one product key available and this key is used by the FullServer.

- What can be done in order to set the new "2 FE and 2 BE" deployment and dump the FullServer?

- Is it possible or is the product key now lost if I uninstall the FullServer?

I have also a second question ...

in the microsoft link https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh699677.aspx the licensing is described in 2 sentences:

A Microsoft Dynamics CRM deployment operates by using a single product key.

However, each Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server in a deployment requires a server license.

As I understand it, I would need only one Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 product key for all 4 servers (in my deployment)

- What does the second sentence actually mean for my example (2 FE and 2 BE)

- Does it only mean that I need 4 operating system (Windows Server) licenses for each machine where I install a Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server?

Thank you in advance!

You need to buy 4 CRM server licences for your 4 CRM servers. As far as I know you can use the same key to install these if they belong to a single deployment (defined as sharing the same MSCRM_Config database).

But you don't need a CRM server licence for other components such as the Reporting Services extension or email router, or any client software (you licence the users, not the Outlook client software, for example).

    Hello Adam,

    thanks for your reply.

I still am a little confused.

I am not an expert in licensing ... but I try to understand it.

As I understand, you mean I will have to actually buy 4 CRM server licenses from Microsoft in order to be able to install the FE or BE.

I am working in a restricted network, with no access to the internet - a private network.

I do not want to buy licenses before I can test the deployment.

How could I install a deployment (2FE and 2BE) for testing purposes without buying licenses?

    Hi Adam,

What can be done in order to set the new "2 FE and 2 BE" deployment and dump the FullServer?

If I try to install a Front- or Back End Server I get an error saying

"The product key is not compatible with the installed version  of Microsoft Dynamics CRM."

Could this be because I have the FullServer already installed and I am not allowed to "attach" any FE or BE to it?

If this would be the case, how could I disable the instance of the FullServer in order to install the 2FE+2BE deployment? Would uninstall FS work?

What I have done is to use a new Sql Server Instance instead of the existing one.

Then I was able to start installing a new Crm BE Server.
