Guys,

I am from manual testing/application support background. The place i am currently in see lots of requirements for .NET and AX. I am wondering how hard it will to learn .NET or AX? I did learn Salesforce recently and worked on couple of volunteer projects, can we get volunteer opportunity in MS Dynamics AX as well?

I would really appreciate if you guys could provide some guidance on this.

Thanks

    Hi newbie_edmon,

It's AX related forum so I will skip .Net. To learn x++ will take same time like any other programming language, however, as AX developers we need to know not only x++ itself but have extensive knowledge in business domain, this part could take you couple of year just to get general understanding and than you will increase you knowledge.  Also please consider that there are couple of versions and functionality along with language capabilities differs a lot between them.

You can find a lot of materials in the web, for example take a look at dev center msdn.microsoft.com/.../mt634620.aspx and ax wiki ax.help.dynamics.com/en

I have not heard about any volunteer projects because it's enterprise product, however, you can find couple of open source project on github or codeplex where you can participate as a dev.

.NET isn't strictly necessary (most AX developers knows little about .NET), but it helps a lot. I think the most important thing is to understand how the platform works - what are assemblies, how the runtime finds assemblies it needs, what is CIL, how garbage collection works and so on.

If you can write code in another .NET language, it gives you some extra options, such as you can write C# libraries for things that would be hard to do in X++, use frameworks for .NET languages, write client apps for integration and so on. Developers familiar with C# also find most new features in X++ very familiar, because the syntax is the same as in C#. In short - it can be very useful, but it's a bonus rather than a core skill.

As with any other development, to know the language isn't enough - you must also get familiar with existing framworks framework, such as how you can use X++ for developing reports. And many things in AX are done in visual designers, which are equally important. For example, you an build complex forms without writing even a single line of code.
