Restoring RMS Headquarters after catastrophic failure

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

It just crossed my mind. Just want to prepare for the worst thing that could happen. In the event of failure wherein I have to reinstall the Windows Server OS, just by having the latest HQ database backup will save the day?

For me, these are the things worth nothing to be successful in restoring RMS:

1. RMS Headquaters version

2. SQL database version

What else should I take note? Please bare with me, I am new to RMS. Been working on it for four months now. If there is a link with a step-by-step procedure in restoring please share.

Thank you,

Koymackoy

Scott - question about your comment on not restoring from a SO backup.

If my last connection to HQ was yesterday at 11 PM, and today I have backed up my SO db at 1 PM, and my SO database crashes at 3 PM..? Why wouldn't I want to restore the SO database with my 1 PM backup done today? Not sure if I misunderstood your comment about not restoring from an SO backup, but if I did please forgive. Thanks.

    Hello Koymackoy,

    Thank you for your questions.

The biggest thing to do is to make sure that you are making regular back-ups of your Headquarters database, and store them on an USB Flash Drive or moving them to a separate computer. This way, if the server crashes, you can quick restore the previous database and get back up and running.

Please note that we do not recommend making backup of the Store databases are restoring those, as if the store backup is missing transactions that were processed between the time the backup occurred and the backup restored, these transactions will be over written.

In a Headquarters environment, we also recommend re-exporting out the store database from Headquarters in the event of a store database/server failure to make sure that the store database is a accurate and complete as possible.

    Thank you,

    1.  Backup all servers/services.  Daily, Weekly and Archive.

    2.  Use SQL Server Backups, http://ola.hallengren.com/ maintenance scripts are fantastic!

Backup your store databases at least twice a day - say, at 1 pm, and after you close but before your last connection to HQ. HQ you should backup after all stores have connected the last time, at night. Yes, keep track of your SQL Server and RMS versions, because if you need to rebuild your machines, after the OS you will need to install SQL and RMS on the client machines - they should all have the same versions. Search the forum for examples of batch files you can run that will backup your databases. There is also a neat tool that is free - http://sqlbackupandftp.com. Good idea to backup, then copy your backup to a remote location. ie an external drive and an offsite location. Hope this helps.
