Moving from CRM 365 v8 to Customer Engagement v9 with Unified Interface -- upgrade or start anew ?

Our current CRM environment started out with CRM 4 and has been upgraded through each iteration to now CRM 365 8 (v8.2.1.176).  Now that we're looking to move both to mobile and also moving to CRM 9 in the future I'm curious if it would be best for us to focus more on moving to Unified Interface.  And with this how possible is it to migrate or upgrade our current CRM entity forms to the new Unified Interface?  Or is it just easier to just start from scratch with new forms and migrate our data over to a new organization?  Our forms are heavily customized with javascript and such, so I'm just not sure how easily this would migrate if that's even an option.  Also we're On Prem if this matters.

Has anyone done this or can any one give tips on moving from CRM 8 to 9 with Unified Interface?  Thanks.

I did an upgrade from 2011 to 9 a few months ago and it was far easier to build from scratch and migrate the data. But I would strongly recommend reviewing the current state of Unified Interface to make sure that it's not missing functionality you need. It's not yet at parity with the "Classic" interface: docs.microsoft.com/.../about-unified-interface There's also been a metric crapload of bugs, but they and the missing components have slowly been getting addressed by Microsoft. Version 9.1 is already way better than 9.0.

That being said, UI has a lot to like. The App Model is very flexible and easy to implement, the native Mobile apps are quite nice, and having the same interface for desktop, phone and tablet is a godsend for user adoption. I was leery of making the jump but am glad I did before going live. In the long run it's made things simpler for everybody.

Thanks for the feedback, this is exactly what I'm looking for.  How did you migrate data and keep your Created On/By and Modified On/By values unchanged?  We're on prem so we could I guess technically update these after migration, but I'd rather keep all updates as supported as possible.    Also are you all on prem?  Just curious as we are.  Thanks again.

    Hi Sam,

You can change the CreatedOn and CreatedBy fields during data migration, but not the Modified On/By fields. There is a setting in security role (under Business Management tab), to override CreatedOn/CreatedBy fields, which allows you to change them.

You can also do an import of the database into a new server and upgrade to version 9 there. You should make sure your hardware is proper to support the new OS (required Windows Server 2016) and you have the correct versions of SQL (2016).

Take a look at the software requirements below:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../software-requirements-for-microsoft-dynamics-365-server

    Hope this helps.
