New warehousing - Questions

Questions:

How can a previously released product be used under AX 2012 R3 "new warehousing"?

How can the fields under the FastTab for Warehouse management be activated?

As an alternative, can a product or product master be released into the same company for a second time with a different Item Number?

Can the Warehouse Mobile Device Portal (WMDP) be implemented to use both "new" and "old" warehouse setups?

Can the Warehouse Mobile Device Portal (WMDP) be implemented to use both "new" and "old" style setups for Released Products?

Thanks in advance.

Go to the storage dimension group that the item is associated with and check the "Use warehouse management processes" button. This will activate the item for the new warehousing.

You also need to have that same checkbox marked on the warehouse that you will be keeping the item in, however this checkbox can only be marked upon initial warehouse setup, you cannot change it on an existing warehouse.

The WMDP can only be used with new warehouse setups to my knowledge. Any warehouse you wish to use the WMDP for must have the "use warehouse management processes" checkbox marked on the warehouse form.

    RE: New warehousing - Questions

    Hi GeeJay,

It is not possible to release a product to a company more than once.

To change a released product from 'not using Warehouse management' to 'using Warehouse management' means you need to change the Item's 'Storage dimension group' to one which has 'Use warehouse management processes' ticked.

You could change this tick on the Storage dimension group that is assigned to the item, or you could create a new Storage dimension group and assign it to the item. PLEASE DO NOT DO EITHER OF THESE THINGS YET!

Changing the setup of an existing Storage dimension group is not possible in standard AX. Changing the Storage dimension group of a released product, which has transactions, is a lot of work (but I think is possible in standard AX).

If you check the resource page of the Warehouse and Transportation management modules:

    blogs.msdn.com/.../introducing-the-new-warehouse-management-and-transportation-management-modules-in-dynamics-ax-2012-r3.aspx

Find the link for 'Presentations, videos and instructor-led labs from Microsoft Dynamics AX Technical Conference 2015'. Here, you will find slides and a video for a session called 'WMSII to new Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 warehouse management', which describes how you can do what you are asking.

Currently, the WMDP can only be used with items that are configured for 'new' warehousing and can only be used in warehouses that are configured for 'new' warehousing.

    RE: New warehousing - Questions

    Hi GeeJay,

Guy provided a very good and detailed answer. Note that it is not supported to have the old and new warehouse being enabled both in a production environment. Or WMS II or the new Warehouse and Transportation management configuration key must be switched off. Also have a look at the blog from Kurt Hatlevik where it is explained in the most expressive way. kurthatlevik.wordpress.com/.../ax-2012-r3-do-not-enable-wms-ii-and-the-new-warehouse-and-transportation-management-in-the-same-installation

So you have to choose between the "old" or the "new" warehouse management. My expectation is that the "new" WMS is the one which Microsoft will continue to support.

Thanks, Cole, Guy and Andre.  Thanks!  And, I will need to study your responses more overnight.

Additional question:  Is AX Retail compatible with the new warehousing?  Are there any restrictions on a WMS Warehouse that is linked to an AX Retail POS Store?

    RE: New warehousing - Questions

    Hi GeeJay,

What I know from a retail warehouse is that Transfer orders are used to transfer goods from the main warehouse to a store. The main warehouse can have the new WMS enabled. The POS is not suitable to use the new WMS functionality.

    RE: New warehousing - Questions

    Hi GeeJay,

My answer is similar to André's and the best answer I can give comes from what I have read. Microsoft have not designed Warehouse management functionality to be used in a Retail store warehouse (yet). You can configure the DC to use Warehouse management, but the store warehouse should be WMSI. However, you will be able to receive transfer orders that are shipped from the DC.

Unfortunately, there is not much information that I can found which describes what doesn't work if you enable a store warehouse to use Warehouse management.

Do we have answers as to what functions do not work when retail warehouse is combined with advanced warehouse?

    RE: New warehousing - Questions

Beyond the explanation that the Warehouse management solution has been designed (for now) to work with retail stores with WHS disabled, I have never read anything that describes what actually doesn't work.

    RE: New warehousing - Questions

I did some investigation here, maybe it will help people trying to understand it.

At first, Setup a store with warehouse enabled for advance warehousing.

    1. Sales order for Pickup:

Case 1: Created a Sales order in POS for Customer pickup with a location enabled and non advance warehouse item.

    Result:

Sales order Creation and pickup from POS was successful and the location at the sales order was defaulted from warehouse items.

Case 2: Created a Sales order in POS for Customer pickup with advance warehouse item.

    Result:

Sales order Creation was successful but the location was not defaulted to the item and pick up at POS failed with error that location does not exist.

    2. Created a sales order for delivery and picked and packed items from scan gun and it works fine. But processing the sales order delivery from POS is not supported.

    3. I have not tried statement posting but I am pretty sure there will be errors at sales order.

    4. PO receiving at POS does not updated the receive field in AX purchase order for advance warehouse enabled items..

    5. Transfer receiving at POS does not updated the receive field in AX Transfer order for advance warehouse enabled items.
