Restore D365FO database to Dev environment

Hello,

We have a local Dev environment which is used as a test environment with a lot of test data.

Windows license has expired on that VM and cannot be refreshed any more so we need to migrate to a new environment which is on a newer version of D365FO.

Is it possible to restore database from the old environment to the new one which is running different application version? I could not find any info on the internet about this.

And one additional question - can local dev environment be upgraded to a newer application version?

I have the same question (0)

Yes, you can restore database from older version to a system with newer version.

If you think about it, it's actually almost the same thing that happens when you update an environment to a new D365 version.

You have a database that is from the old version - then the application is updated to a new version - and then database sync is triggered from the updated application.

However if you have skipped more than 3 MS updates you might have some issues. As you might know, Microsoft requires you to keep your system up to date or it will not stay supported.

And yes, local dev environment can be updated to a newer application version.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/deployment/install-deployable-package

Skip the "Install an application (AOT) deployable package on a development environment" chapter since you're installing a binary update, not AOT deployable package.
