Multi-bin selection on fulfillment

We are testing multi-bin selection in one of our smaller companies (smaller number of items, bins, etc) with the hopes of rolling out enterprise wide.  However, we've run into a major problem with the fulfillment process where the items in the first bin are used beautifully, but when that bin is empty, we have to manually tell it where to go look next for the item.  That kind of defeats the purpose.

We use the v-Ship application for our shipping needs so when v-Ship didn't know where to go look next, we thought that was our problem and contacted our support there.  Today, we received the response below which reinforces it's a GP limitation.

"Assuming we are still talking about Order Fulfillment, GP pulls automatically from the default Sales Order Fulfillment bin and that’s it. If there isn’t enough there, you have to manually specify the bin.  When you use multi-bin, you generally use a warehouse system such as Collect for GP"

If we had a warehouse management system, this would probably not be an issue.  However, we're not quite ready for that.

Soooooo.......is there a way for GP2010 to automatically roll over to the next bin in sequence?  It just seems logical to me that, if all the programming was done for specifying and tracking the inventory by bin, there would be a way to automatically fulfill from those bins in sequence.  Yes, I know my "logic" can be flawed! :)

Would be thankful for any suggestions!!

Carole

    Hi Carole,

I have gotten this question a couple times and as of now I do not know of an out of the box solution for GP.

However, you have a couple options:

We have a sales add-on for GP called BluWare which has this functionality you are referring to with auto-picking the bins when entering a sales transaction. Our add-on is quite robust and has many other features which I can get you some additional information on if you are interested.

If you are unable to consider an add-on solution we could also do a project to customize the SOP Bin logic in GP to do this same work. Unfortunately it is not a simple cut and past of some code but is possible if you are interested.

Let me know if I can get you any more information.

    Thanks,

    Adam

    Hi-

We have a module for GP that adds the ability for SOP to auto-select inventory from multiple bins.  It will also use the Bin Priority settings, if present.  willoware.com/.../gp-powerpack
