Extending D365 F&O Forms - Question about limitations

Hello,

To give a slight background my company is moving from a highly customized legacy ERP system into Dynamics 365 F&O and I am doing some research into the exact level of control we have when extending the base implementation so that I can better guide solutions for whatever gaps there may be between our system and D365. We mocked up a brief design outline of perceived gaps in the Project Quotations module and I have been investigating how feasible said solution would be. I've done quite a bit of searching for answers on these topics but wasn't able to find any good resources so I apologize if these sort of questions have been asked elsewhere but I promise that I looked.

My first question is when designing extentions for a form such as the sales quotation module the preview window only seems to show the first tab (Lines Panel) and I could not find a way to get it to switch to the second tab (header panel). Is this possible and I'm simply missing the function somewhere?

Second is there documentation somewhere that outlines the limitations of extending a form? I successfully added new data fields to the table, made them visible on the relevant section I wanted them but found the display to appear less than ideal. I wanted to increase the number of columns that the data fields were displayed in and looking at the various elements I saw the LineViewHeaderGroup (Group) element was set with a columns value of 3 which could not be changed. If I am correct and this is not something that can be changed through an extension I would love to see a resource where I can see this information and other fields like it that cannot be altered as that information would be very helpful throughout our implementation.

Thank you for your time,

Sam

    Pratik,

Unfortunately even as a custom pattern the column field remained un-editable.

    Martin,

I appreciate the idea, that is something I did not consider earlier.

    Thank you,

    Sam

Also note that although you aren't allowed to modify many properties in Visual Studio, you can change them from X++ at runtime.

    Hi Samuel,

For your second question: reason might be the applied pattern to that form.. you can try by removing that pattern and adding custom pattern to that extension of form.

    Sure André,

Simply put I'm attempting to extend and modify the SalesQuotationProjTable form to make some minor ease of use customizations, example screen shown below.

This form is of the Details Transactions Pattern and when previewed in the designer in visual studio it shows the following screen

My first question is whether or not there is a way to preview the second tab of the screen. The first tab here is the "lines" tab from the first screen shot. I was looking to preview the header tab for changes I'd be making there. I understand I could just make the changes, build it and look at the result on the dev environment but it would be nice not to have to wait till the program builds to see a preview.

My second question is that as you can see in the first screen the Project Quotation header data is fit into 3 columns. When I go into the properties of that group I am unable to edit the column from 3 to say 5. It appears we as developers are limited to what we can manipulate through extensions and I just want to make sure I am not missing something. Also if I am correct and there is no way to gain access to this through extension is there documentation somewhere that outlines what the limitations of extension are? As a note I understand that technically speaking I could duplicate the form and make any changes I needed to that and use it but also understand that is not idea when it comes to accepting enhancements from Microsoft in the future.

Once again thank you for your time.

    Hi Sam,

I'm not completely able to follow your examples. Can you share screenshots for both your scenarios?
