Synchronise Dynamics 365 CE data in mulitple instances.

Posted on by 180

Designing a solution to synchronize data from a master Dynamics 365 CE instance, to various Dynamics 365 CE destination instances (having the same config & customizations).

Considering a following:

  • CDS
  • Custom solution via Azure stack, i.e., functionality to push data to Azure Service Bus (Topics)
  • Custom development via  SSIS

Please share your thoughts, other options available and if there are any useful links.

UP on this. im looking at CDS as well as the primary storage of Accounts & contacts master data for a tenant with multiple crm instances. But in the list of Data Integration templates, i cannot see a CDS <> CRM template. any thoughts? ty

For the project I mentioned, the client wanted control and visibility over the data feeds to the other D365 instances, and they were already D365 users, so it made the most sense for us to store the integration settings and status details inside Dynamics.

Also, in our case, the source and target entities across the D365 instances were the same, so it was easy to map the data across.

I've mostly used the Common Data Service with PowerApps so far. I can think of several integrations I've built in the past, though, that I would likely build on top of CDS. In one case, I needed to sync data across four completely separate systems (custom ASP.NET apps, D365, SAP) and, although the integration is running fine (using mostly Scribe Online), using CDS likely would've made the project easier.

    Thanks for the reply Tim.

Any thoughts on the CDS (Common Data Service). On paper it's existence is to help with these syncronisation scenarios.

Similar to what you described, one of my clients needed to periodically copy data from their main Dynamics 365 instance to multiple other instances. Based on their requirements, I decided to build the solution using Azure WebJobs, but Azure Functions would work fine as well. Here are some notes about the solution:

    • Run as Azure WebJobs on a schedule.
    • The "target" D365 instances are stored in a custom entity in the main D365 instance. The URL, login and secured/encrypted password is stored.
    • The WebJob queries that custom entity to determine the target D365 instances.
    • Another custom entity was used for special logging purposes. It showed last integration date, # of new/updated records, any errors, etc.

Depending on your requirements, you might also be able to use Logic Apps or Microsoft Flow for this.
