BIDS installation for VS 2015 / Dynamics 365 fails

Hi everybody

This is an old issue I already posted in August, but as it is still not solved, I re-posted it again.

My environment

  • Windows 7
  • Dynamics 365
  • VS 2015
  • SSDT 2015
  • VS 2012
  • SSDT for VS 2012

What I want to do now is to install the BIDS 2015, but everytime I try, I receive the following error:

"The computer is running an operating system that Microsoft Dynamics CRM does not support. To install this product, you must upgrade your computer to a supported operating system. For a complete list of supported operating systems, see the Microsoft Dynamics CRM documentation (go.microsoft.com/.../p)."

The provided link does not help at all as the supported OS are not listed in detail.

With regards to the information provided on the download pages for BIDS 2015 as well as BIDS 2016, Windows 7 is supported.

What I found out in the meantime is, that the installation routine seem to do a wrong query of the OS parameters in the registry. In the log file mentioned in the error message above, my Windows version seems to be 6.0.6000 (and SP is left out) whereas regarding to winver it is 6.1 (I took a look into the registry to confirm this).

07:30:26|   Info| Current OS Version: 6.0.6000
07:30:26|   Info|   ServicePack:
07:30:26|   Info|   System Type: Workstation
07:30:26|   Info|   Suite Mask: 0x0100

Why is there a difference? Where does Microsoft look for the version number? Is that the reason that the error message says that my OS is not supported? Though it is Win 7 with SP1 like required?

Many thanks and regards

Mike

    Hi,

I'll just try a relatively long shot.. are you running correct installer package(the one downloaded from the BIDS page)? Never saw that message from the report authoring extensions (but it would be a normal message if you were trying to run a CRM server setup)

Thanks Rajkumar. The explanations in the provided link state that e.g. VS 2015 and SSDT for VS 2015 have to be installed. And that's what I already have.

Thanks Alex. You might be right.

Just, with regards to the description on the download pages linked above, Win7 should be supported. Not only a server version of Windows (like e.g. Win 2012 server). Therefore I suppose I used the correct BIDS version. But to be honest, I'm not sure.

It is possible that you might have a conflict because you have both VS2012 and VS2015, and BIDS 2012 and 2015.

Although D365 is supported for BIDS 2012 and BIDS 2015, having both of them on the same machine, might cause Reporting Extensions some issues.

If possible, I would try this with another machine if you have, and only install one version of the development tools.

Thanks Aric. This also might be a reason. But then I'm wondering why it works on the Win 10 machine of a colleague of mine.

And the issue is getting more and more strange to me.

I started to remove all components and I can't update / modify / re-install MS SQL Server 2012 anymore. I get almost the same error like with BIDS: "The operating system on this computer does not meet the minimum requirements ... For Windows 7 ... Service Pack 1 or later is required."

And that's what I have installed: Win7 with SP1. That's why I really don't understand why I get this error!?

I have exactly the same issue.
Did you ever get this resolved?

    If so, how so?

Frankly, the effort to get this stuff installed is ridiculous and frustrating beyond words.
