Ideal ratio of Dynamics GP database to SQL Server Instance

Dear All,

Have googled a lot but unable to get answer on this. Am working on GP SQL Servers consolidation project. (We have GP10.0 and GP2013 R2)

For that, I need to arrive at the ideal ratio of GP Databases, a single SQL Instance can handle.

And also, how many SQL Instances ideally should be running on 1 SQL Server box, for Dynamics GP specifically.

I know many moving dimensions involved in above question. However, would appreciate any facts you may have in generic/specific scenarios.

Thanks!!!

Yes Jon, even I feel the same that only way to know is to try and add Hardware resource as per performance. Still in search for some good base on which we can count roughly.

Thanks Harry for your valuable input.

    Here are some specifics:

I am working on project of Consolidating GP 10.0/2013 Application and SQL servers.

    On SQL Side:

We have 9 SQL server having 2 to 3 SQL Instances (each carrying 100+ Database ranging 2 to 3 GB size each)

They need to be consolidated on 3 physical SQL servers (migrating all above instances)

    On Application side:

Same as SQL, We have 2 to 3 GP Instances mapped to each GP Application box. They also need to be consolidated on 3 GP application box. Users connect to GP using citrix sessions.

I have started analysing on Cost / Benefits of above project and gathering the server existing metrics to arrive at hardware requirement (CPU/Disk/Memory) etc. However seems there are so many aspects involved like whether GP boxes would be able to handle I/O of that many user sessions even CPU, RAM etc. increased.

Hence would like to get suggestions from Veterans here, on how to go about to achieve consolidation.

We are looking for a golden formula or at least considerable base to decide how we can consolidate the GP SQL servers.

Will checkout the MAP toolkit and update you. Thanks a lot Harry!!

    Pragnesh,

In the end, Dynamics GP is a SQL based application. So, the correct tool for the job is the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit for SQL Server.

    technet.microsoft.com/.../dd537572.aspx

"The Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit is an agentless inventory, assessment, and reporting tool that can securely assess IT environments for various platform migrations."

Without knowing the specifics of your situation, a recommendation would be hard to give. I can say, with proper planning, almost any deployment can be supported.

I've seen it done with 150 company databases on one box, 200 users.  The only way to know is to try.  I don't know what your budget is, but be prepared to upgrade disk and memory as more users get on and performance drops.
