Does Microsoft Dynamics SL support backward compatibility

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Does Microsoft Dynamics SL support backward compatibility? Can a user currently working in Microsoft Dynamics SL2011 migrate to Microsoft Dynamics SL2015 or does he need to purchase the new software.

    Thanks for the response

Below is the more clarification on our posted query:

We are working on one of the project for our customer to develop connectors (Integration Adapter), which would enable the end users to quickly integrate cloud and on premise applications. As a part of this project, we are targeting to develop connectors for Dynamics SL 2015 and would explore Endpoint (API) features using SOAP web services and build integration flow in the connector. This connector would provide the end user i.e. Dynamics SL 2015 customers, ‘simple, quicker & ready to use’ platform to access features / services provided by Dynamics SL.

To start work on this, have couple of queries:

    1) If user is using Dynamics SL2011 or other older version (older than 2015) with SOAP services, Is it possible for them to use Dynamics SL2015 SOAP webservices?

    2) Do they need to upgrade there setup with latest version to use 2015 SOAP services?

    2) Are there any backward compatibilty support for SOAP web services?

    Any pointers will be helpful

Agree with Rick Kerns on all statements. Exception is Dynamics SL 2011 (latest FP/CU) will do a one-time release of regulatory updates at year end for payroll/AP 1099 changes.

RE: Does Microsoft Dynamics SL support backward compatibility

Microsoft's position is to support the current version and one version back of their products.  Those versions include feature packs and certain service packs.  So, as Microsoft releases new versions of Dynamics SL, the oldest supported version falls off of their support list which means they will not provide software corrections or required updates (e.g., payroll W2 changes, AP 1099 changes, etc.) for the version that falls off of the support list.

If you have an active software maintenance agreement for Dynamics SL then you have the rights to download and install the latest version of that software.  If you do not have an active software maintenance agreement then you do not have that right and would have to purchase the update.  Also, please be aware that new versions of Dynamics SL can also require newer versions of SQL Server and/or Windows Server (which are not covered under an active Dynamics SL software maintenance agreement so those may have to still be purchased.

Finally, the above applies to on-site software licenses for Dynamics SL.  If you are running Dynamics SL under a SAAS model then you typically are upgraded as new versions are released.
