Data Migration: SAP to Dynamics AX. Standard mapping template

Dear all,

As data migration between SAP and AX would likely have been performed many times. I would expect to be able to find data mapping documents covering at least most of the standard fields in both systems.

Does any one have any experience from this or could point me in the right direction. We are facing quite a huge and time consuming task if having to start from scratch field by field.

Very grateful for any helping advice.

BR,

Erik

In the projects that I was involved there has always a manual mapping of SAP fields. There are many public documents of SAP tables and their relationships but unfortunately I don’t know any public document that maps SAP fields and AX fields.

Some SAP data requires some manipulation before input it into AX because, also there isn’t the concept of dimensions in SAP you must map some standard fields as dimensions in AX.

I don’t have experience within all the modules of SAP, mainly only the financial ones. But feel free to raise questions.

I will recommend please use PI for mapping, SAP having in build tool like BizTalk to map the field with third party software.

    Hi Ritzell,

I'm just wondering if you ever found anything helpful around this topic?  We're just about to embark on a SAP FI -> Dynamics data migration, with one of the first tasks being the field mapping for the transaction data.  Any info or pointers that would aid with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Gareth.

Source data is quite dependent from SAP settings, for example, GL entries can be stored in 2 or 6 tables if  the company is using the old or new GL in SAP. Dynamics AX don’t have such functionality. You can ask SAP data tables in a SAP forum, put the link I will try to support  you.

    Thanks Nuno,

We already know the underlying SAP data tables & fields e.g. BKPF, BSEG, BSID, BSAD etc.  We also have the MS Dynamics import templates e.g. "Vendor Invoice Header", "Vendor Invoice Line" etc.  The next step is the field mapping. So that's mapping the SAP table/field to MS Dynamics Entity Template/Field.  I appreciate it's not going to be as simple as a 1 to 1 mapping and there is going to be some transformation (ETL) required.  It was finding any existing documentation on this mapping that was of interest to me.  But i'm not sure anything exists.

The approach at my previous company was to dump majority of the master data we needed from SAP to Excel, make manipulations if required there for data format, then save it as CSV. In AX we have created custom DMF/DIXF entities to pull them in, or do any additional conversions. Mapping was done manually, there is no documentation available from official channels. The reason why such document would not be useful is that the means of importing will be unique for each implementation project, since the interfaces must be developed yourself. Pretty much everyone does it however they can depending on the timeframe available and skill level of the functional/technical team.

Ok thanks Vilmos, I was hoping that these AX import templates were relatively fixed/standard for finance.  But if each implementation needs to create their own custom import templates then I can see why nothing would exist.

There are some out of the box entities that cover some of the Standard functionality to create general journals, and so on. For us the challenge was that we have used LBC ledger balancing which did not exist at the time, also we have used 7 segments for financial dimensions with custom behaviors, for which we had to heavy customizations and improvements. Also since that was a manufacturing company with very specific requirements on master data such as customers and items, where we built almost everything with Product hierarchies and Attributes, the Standard AX templates were not fitting at all from bringing those in.

You have to look into your specific case and see where do you expect customizations for the system, and put the data entities in line with those in order to be able to import data. Then once that is established, you could worry about in what format can you feed the data to AX.
