Component and Finished Good Lot Trace Capabilities. Core (Inventory) Features vs Manufacturing Module Features

Hello,

We are a distribution company that also does some light assembly operations. We need to track finished good and component items by lot as they are sold to customers or in the case of components purchased from vendors. We are currently analyzing the (inventory) GP core BOM features and our initial discovery causes us to believe that the features provided in the inventory module will satisfy our lot trace needs. However, we also want to “kick the tires” on the manufacturing module as we believe there are many other features there that we can benefit from.

Based on my read of the information available at the link provided below and my cursory read of the manufacturing module user guides I don’t believe that items produces via a manufacturing BOM allow for lot trace of component / finished goods as does the core (inventory) BOM. Is that correct? Also, can the two (Core and Manufacturing) BOM coexist in the same GP environment? It may be that we can l use the core BOM and lot trace for items that we need to trace and also benefit from the other features in the manufacturing module.

Thank you.

Mfg BOM is excellent for tracking serials and lots.   We have medical companies using it specifically for this and it more than satisfies the traceabilty requirements.   The Mfg also has routings which allow for tracking of labor.   I would not encourage the use of both as it gets confusing for users and also more difficult for reporting.

    Dan,

Thank you for your reply. I have loaded the Mfg module in our test environment and am still setting it up. It is good to know that the Mfg BOM can be used to trace lot data from compenents thru assembly to finished good and on to customers through SOP. Since this is the case I would see little need for use the Inventory BOM.

    Thank you.
