Merge two fields in new field

Hi All,

I would like to know the possibilities of merging 2 fields in a 3rd field and display in grid view of Leads in CMR 2011.

example:

I have one column containing URL: http://domainname.firstleveldomain/page.aspx?UserName

and Second Column Containing UserNames. (dhaval, fasttrack, mayuresh and etc.)

I want to display 3rd column in Lead grid like (Column1 + Column2).

Is it possible?

Thanks,

Dhaval Panchal

It's possible if you create a third field on the entity to hold this data for you. What you can do is fire a plugin on both create and update of the record that updates this third field with the merged result. Then you can display this third field in a grid.

The only thing you'll need to be aware of is this won't automatically update all of the existing records in the system, only new records. Existing records will only get updated when a user changes and saves the record. But you could easily write something to historically update all these fields e.g. export the data to excel (checking the option to make data available for reimport), update in excel, and reimport the updated data.

    Hi Conor Gallagher,

Thank you for the prompt response. I need only to display the 3rd Column in Grid view. Dont needs to perform any operation, only want to display the 3rd column by merging 2.

    Please suggest.

    Thanks

Unfortunately you can't just display data on the out of the box grids without the use of a backing field. You can achieve this on a form, but not on the grids. (Or, to be completely accurate, you can't achieve this on a grid in a supported way and I would not advise trying to go down the unsupported route!)

The only other option you have, which would take a lot more effort, is to write your own custom grids (in Silverlight or HTML) that allow you to add these type of fields.

But, my advice is if you want to achieve this just use a third backing field to help you out. You don't even have to display this field on a form, it can do it's magic in the background.

You could use either a plugin or javascript on the form to update a third field as said (javascript will only run when the form is opened so wont work if fields are updated automatically in workflow for example)

Then create a view with the required columns including the updated third field, add the subgrid with the custom view as default.
