Warehouse Put away - Split Lines functionality

What does the warehouse put away split line functionality actually achieve. Its description says it can be used if my bins are not large enough. I attempted to use the function but received the following error (I could not change Qty to handle or outstanding) so I just simply changed the Bin code to another bin. All ok, if I only have a small number of rows to deal with but with a large number of rows where all items are serialised, it is a pain. Hence, the reason for looking at the split line option.
