Hello All Experts,

When we take backup and restore it to higher version then why do we require data migration.

we setup the new organization on higher version by using restored database.

so why do we come across data migration.

Who tells you that you need data migration?

If you are upgrading an organisation database via CRM Deployment Manager, then no data migration is required. Why do you think that data migration is required ?

I agree with David. It is not required with the CRM Deployment Manager, this is why I was asking why you would need to do that.

But one possible reason could be, that Microsoft released new features or entities in a new major version upgrade of CRM.

Then it could be possible that you have created custom entities and functionalities that are now part of the new CRM release.

That could lead you to think about to migrate data of custom entities to the new out of the box CRM entities.

    Hello Andreas,

i was asking about probabilities and i am not migrating anything.

but somewhere i read that SSIS package is used for data migration.

if SSIS is used for migration then why migration used in MSCRM?

Sometimes it is not possible to do an organization database upgrade as you have stated above.

Image you want to migrate from On-premise to Cloud or you have other ERP Systems which data you want need to migrate into an existing CRM organization. Or you need to migrate CRM 4.0 organization data from a subdivision of a big company to an established leading Dyn365 system.

An interesting reference of migration tools is here:
