Why is it called "trial balance" when it's an aging report

why are the aging reports in GP called trial balances when they are really just an aging report?

    The full name is 'Aged Trial Balance'.  It serves as an aging and a trial balance because that's the report you use to reconcile to your AP or AR control accounts, as well as review aging data.
