We are using 2013 on Premise version and the Web Servers and Application Servers are on different boxes. I was slightly puzzled when I found an IIS server installed on the Application Server. Is it possible that the IIS server on the Application Server is being used in any way and how does the application server and web server communicate ?

Thanks in advance.

    RE: CRM Architecture

CRM terminology uses the terms 'Front End Server', 'Back End Server' and 'Deployment Administration Server' as the group roles, and then specific roles within that. When you refer to 'Web Server', do you mean 'Front End Server', and 'Application Server' to mean 'Back End Server' ?

The  'Front End Server' and 'Deployment Administration Server' group roles need IIS, but 'Back End Server' does not
