How to void a journal entry that is not yet posted. thanks.

One question, is the journal entry entered directly from the GL or originating from other module ?
If it is entered from the GL level, just delete it without having to post it and void it.
Otherwise, post the Journal and void the originating transaction depending on the type of transaction.
To delete the journal, go to Transaction >Financial > General. Fill in the journal entry and delete it.

Hi,
You can find out the transaction and where its source originated from based on the "Source Document" field on the General Transaction Entry window If it is a direct General Ledger entry it will be "GJ". Based on the identification as said by mahmoud you can either delete the General Ledger transaction directly or void the Originating transaction.
To add a point of information here, if this entry came from a sub-ledger and you delete it, you will lose the drilldown ability. So if it did come from a sub-ledger it would be best to void it in the sub-ledger from which it came, post both of the resulting J/E's(you do this to maintain audit trail) and then re-enter the transaction correctly. Otherwise, if it is just a J/E you can delete it as Mahmoud suggests.
It is also possible that you are not allowed to delete saved journal transactions based on your financial setup (Tools --> Setup --> Financial --> General Ledger).
If the box for "Delete Saved Transactions" is not ticked, you will have to void instead. In this case, the Delete button on the transaction becomes a "Void" button.
Select the transaction to screen in the journal entry window and click Void.
Hi Heather,
It's a very valid point. In this case the only option is to void the transaction.
These are the few reason to have this kind of setup as follows:
a) to be on the safer side by not giving the delete access to the entry user.
b)to keep track on all their transactions and it will be very useful at the time of auditing.
c) to avoid skipping General Ledger numbers.
d) to avoid unnecessary deletion of wrong GL.
