Item allocation failed, due to pending replenishment work.

This is probably a really stupid question but pls bear with me as I have a limited background/knowledge base with AX2012.

We are getting failed item allocation errors in the work creation history log when work is created for our sales orders in a particular scenario. It seems that in the case where we have all our bulk stock assigned to replen work, that has yet to be carried out/completed, the work creation for the sales order then fails and stops dead. Both the replen and the sales order work are driven by batch processes so we are not aware of a issue until it is potentially too late and we have an unhappy customer with no goods.

Currently the only safety net we have is a queue running location for "allocation failed" occurrences in the work creation form.

would just like to know if we have missed a better way to get around the above scenario. Is there a way that if the work creation fails due to this, it does not just end, but tries again after the replen work is carried out?

We are not up to date with our updates, so are potentially missing a fix somewhere?

Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

Are your replenishments of type Min/Max?

Have you got a setting for 'Sales orders' at Warehouse management -> Setup -> Work -> Location directive failures?

    Hi,

Yes we have the min max setting set up and also have location directive set to stop work on location directive failures.

Hmm. I'll have a think. One more question. Are your sales orders only picking from 'Picking' locations, or are they also allowed to pick from Bulk locations?

Thanks for this. they are allowed to pick from bulk also.

This will be a problem if you allow sales orders to be picked from both the Pick face and Bulk. The open MinMax replenishment work will reserve the stock in the bulk locations, such that your sales orders cannot have it.  Maybe it would be nice if Sales work could see the open MinMax replenishment, and use it (but become blocked by the replenishment work), but this is not possible in standard, as far as I know.

I can think of different approaches you could try to handle it.

You could cancel your open Min/Max replenishments before you start creating Sales work. Probably not practical if you replenish at the same time that you are picking sales orders.

You could stop allowing Sales orders to pick from Bulk, and think about enabling 'Wave demand replenishment'. Wave demand replenishments are good, in that Processing a Wave will create a replenishment when AX detects that the Picking location does not have enough stock. The replenishment will 'block' the sales work until such time that the replenishment is completed. The downside is that the Wave demand replenishment will only create a replenishment which is for the quantity that is needed by the sales work: it will not also fill to Max.

You could turn off Location directive failures. Then the sales work will still get created, but it will have a blank Pick location (since AX does not know where you can pick it from). Maybe this is better than the work failing.

(Anyone who thinks that Wave demand replenishment also being able to fill to Max in Bulk -> Pick scenarios is a good idea could up vote here: ideas.dynamics.com/.../ID0003457 )

Thanks for your help guy. Looks like we are a bit snookered here then. I will have a look at the wave demand replenishments to see if we can do something with these.
